did you run the rpm from a terminal?

I suspect it could be a dependencies problem since it ran smooth in 10.3. If you install it in a console as root with the command: rpm -i <the exact name of the package you got> what are the results? Post all those messages to help us understand this issue

You already looked if Skype wasn’t installed? On a 64 bit version you need to install libqt4-32 bit and libqt4-x11-32bit first, but you should have seen a warning when you didn’t install these libraries before

Hello ,

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Right I have got it working now but its rather strange. I installed the RPM from the command line , it seemed to work but then I could not see Skype on the list of applications , soooooo , I thought the install had not worked , and tried again but it said it WAS installed. So I executed it from the command line and it runs.
but it still does not appear on the applications list and I have to keep the console window open all the time I run skype, coincidently the console window fills up with this message over and over again while skype runs:-

ALSA lib pcm.c:2144:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.hdmi

Its not a massive problem as it seems to work ok but I’m not very fussy , I suppose some people will go crazy with this. Also having to execute it from the command line is far from ideal.

The install of OpenSuse is 32 bit and the machine is a IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpad x41 for your information.

Hope this is of use to someone.

Best Regards

Matt

You may create your own launcher for skype, just right click on the Desktop widget and select ‘Link to Application’ then fill in the pertinent details.

I also a skype problem only I got skype to install fine BUT when I try to run it it load the first screen then jumps to my contacts and disappears!!! Any ideas?

I am also having the same issue. It doesn’t seem to affect skype though.

When running skype from the terminal I get this:

Skype V4L2: Failed to change capture framerate (30)
ALSA lib pcm.c:2202:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.hdmi

Have you figured out how to fix this?

Andres

Hi,
You can try to install or update libasound2 via Yast2-Software management and get it from repo.
Goodluck

Sorry I had so many problems with getting a sound system that would actually work on SUSE 11 I went back to windows!
Shame I enjoyed my time with SUSE 10.3 but PC’s are there to do a job if they don’t they are next to useless In my opinion.

Its all very well having the best most stable OS etc etc but if V11 makes setting up a simple function like sound such an epic issue I am happy to risk the rubbish produced by Bill and his band of merry men a little bit longer.
PS the Sound, Skype, Bluetooth, Phone Sync, Phone Modem, 3G Dongle are all working fine now! NOVELL make SUSE that efficient and you will have a winner, without it you have a great toy for techies to play with.

I reinstalled my OpenSuSe 11.1 32-bits. Because I was having many issues with it. But now skype doesn’t work!!

I get the same message:

ALSA lib pcm.c:2202:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM cards.pcm.hdmi

And then when I want to place a call it says Problem with audio playback

Andres

I already have libasound2, I tried reinstalling and it didn’t work

Even though I still get the message I now have skype working. It seems skype displays that message for my first available sound output device, when in reality I use another.

I had to remove the apparmor jail for skype, it wasn’t working

My follow up: The “rpm --install skype…” command just mentioned missing libraries and said nothing about needing 32 bit versions. This thread gave me that hint and all is fine now. If there’s a developer looking and if it wouldn’t be too much trouble, perhaps an installation question like, “Do you intend to install Skype?” and use that answer to include the necessary 32 bit libraries. It’d be helpful. Thanks!

Or as master yoda would say:
