I have installed skype some time ago and was using it for some while and it was working that time, today when i start it, it throws an error ‘Aborted’.
Yup, that’s from terminal. I am on 11.3 64bit KDE4.5.
Any helping hand will be appreciated.

One of the 32 bit libraries wanted for Skype may have got updated/replaced.
Is it saying anything other than “Aborted”? Did this start happening after installing KDE4.5?
Nope, nothing more than ‘Aborted’.
I installed KDE4.5 from the day i installed 11.3, so i am pretty sure it was working in KDE4.5 before.
But yes maybe that is possible if there are some 32bit libraries upgraded or removed. Can’t say anything about that.
Hmmmm… That is going to be bit difficult.
Anyway, see if you get any clues from the shared library dependency.

I’m experiencing a similar problem on my dad’s pc. Skype was working fine until after we ran an update I think (can’t be a 100% sure). Now skype won’t start and just closes with Aborted when starting it from the console. I tried removing the ~./skype folder to force it to create a new profile folder but that didn’t help. It still aborts the start-up. I then created a new KDE user account and skype doesn’t start with the new account either so I believe it’s nothing to do with a user setting but seems to be a system problem.
This is a AMD64 PC running the latest updates of kde4.4.4 from the standard repos on oS11.3.
Well just a small update. Yesterday evening I tried to roll back all packages to those on the install DVD. I inserted the DVD and disabled all repos apart from the DVD then did a switch all packages to this repo sorted a few dependencies and did the downgrade. I also tried to remove all packages including Skype and the additional 32 bit libraries that were not part of the original install. Then reinstalled Skype but it still didn’t start.
The only other option I can think of now is to do a completely clean install then install Skype before any updates or other packages and take it from there. It’s very puzzling as Skype worked fine on this PC with 11.3 and KDE4.4.4. I’ve found a few other posts of other users experiencing the same problem when googling but no real fixes.
I checked the list of libs with mine and couldn’t find any differences. I have no problems with Skype.
Skype works here, on my laptop.
Try this:
mv ~/.Skype ~/.Skype.old
skype
If that works, reenter your login data and preferences. Your contacts are at Skype’s.
That doesn’t work for me. Nor did creating a completely new user in oS and trying under the new account. I’m sort of resigned to reinstalling oS11.3.
I had the same problem. Yesterday skype worked and today doesn’t work (aborted after start). But I have solved “aborted” problem by downloading static version: http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-static
And it works like a charm
Interesting. Are you running a 64bit PC? I just looked at the static version and in the readme is says
We recommend copying the
skype binary to /usr/bin and installing sounds/, lang/ and avatars/ into
the /usr/share/skype directory.
Where did you place the skype.conf file?
Also, does it still use the ~./Skype profile? I can’t try it yet as the problem is on my dad’s PC and I won’t be going over till the weekend.
EDIT: I assume you uninstall Skype first before using the static version - right?
Well the static version didn’t help either. Exactly the same problem with it aborting. I bit the bullet and reinstalled oS11.3 didn’t apply any updates and now Skype works fine. I’ll take snapshots (to allow me to roll back) of the OS before applying the updates in stages and see which one breaks Skype again.
I have a same problem with skype. I use this repositories

Any help?
> Any help?
try this…
use your file manager to go to your /home/[you]/.Skype
and change the name of shared.lck to shared.lckBAK
and shared.xml to shared.xmlBAK
then open a terminal, type in and enter skype
leave the terminal open
does skype open?
does it work ok?
if not, copy and paste the terminal output back to this thread
if it does work, shut down skype count to 20, start skype again with the
icon…if it works, then you may delete the shared.lckBAK and
shared.xmlBAK files in the .Skype directory (they will have been now
replaced with new shared.[whatever] files)…
and, let us know how you get on…

Doesn’t work. I’ve renamed these files, started skype, and it aborted again.
bojan@linux-71rf:~> skype
Aborted
bojan@linux-71rf:~>
@Reboca: you’re reusing an old thread. Next time rather create a new one, stating openSUSE version, desktop used, 32bit / 64bit. This info would no doubt led us to the fact that you have a 64bit system + ditto openSUSE install, which would have brought us to the idea that you should have the 32bit libraries installed. Please search the forums for ‘skype’ and you will find threads that explain which libraries sould be installed: “packagename-32bit” is what you need to have for skype.

interesting…i see that you followed the guidance on this page
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Skype and installed the libraries needed for
a 32 bit system…
so i assume you have a 32 bit openSUSE system, correct?
because if you have a 64 system i’m guessing you would have taken the
next step, and installed the required libs for that system…
and, should i also assume you installed skype using the info given on
that page’s “Installing skype” ??
if so, they maybe somehow your downloaded rpm got scrambled…maybe
uninstall (with YaST) and try installing again…it should “just work”
(however, i must admit i’m not running bleeding edge software like you,
just plain jane out of the box 11.4 and kde4.6)
oh, maybe this will help you, let us know:
if not there, have a look at this list http://tinyurl.com/4xa3qce
and, let use know if removing and reinstalling Skype helps, or not…

@Knuprht
I’m sorry for thread hijacking, but during the search for solution of my problem, i’ve found this thread, so I posted my problem here.
Anyway, I’ve fixed my problem. First, I’ve realised that I’m using old version skype (2.2.0.25), so I’ve deinstalled it. Upon that, I’ve installed new version 2.2.0.35, but problem remains. Then I’ve tried solution by DenverD (Thank You DenverD!) and it works.
I use 32bit openSUSE 11.4 and first time I’ve installed skype, I was using this page SDB:Skype - openSUSE . This time, I’ve uninstalled skype with YaST, then installed it (new version) with KpackageKit.
Sorry for my bad English.

english is fine and am happy you can now Skype (until MS cripples it for us)
