Skype 4.3 in OpenSUSE 13.1 - Microphone Issues

I’m having issues with my microphone in Skype (v4.3). The microphone either doesn’t pick up any noise, or the playback from skype is barely audible and very choppy and faint. I’ve checked that the microphone itself works by using

arecord -vv -fdat foo.wav

and the resulting foo.wav contains a perfectly audible recording. I’ve tried going through a number of blog posts referencing skype and opensuse problems, and I’ve tried a few things (disabling pulseaudio, changing latency of skype from launch, etc.), but nothing has worked so far. If anyone has any ideas/workarounds they’ve discovered, please let me know. I can supply any additional input or information that would help.

Did you check the mixer settings? Also be sure you have the 32 bit libs

What should I be looking for in the mixer settings?

As far as 32 bit libraries, the following packages are installed through YaST:

alsa-plugins-32bit
alsa-plugins-pulse-32bit
libpulse0-32bit

There are more, but those seem like the relevant ones to me.

a good way to install skype

use an opensuse packet with one click method

for this :

go to software.opensuse.org

search “skype”

click on “skype”

click on “display unstable packets”

click on " 1 click install" of “home:winsky:skype”

i use this packet since several months without pb

They really ought to change the name of the “Unstable” to “User Contributed” or something less cataclysmic.

I’ll ask a question regarding this packages because I’ma bout to install
skype as well… I’ve seen then, but I don’t understand the choices in there.
In skype there are :

home:XRevan86:
home:tatarimoke4.3.0.3732
home:twotaps:branche…4.3.0.3732

Are they the same ? How do we pick the right one ?

Thanks

openSuSe 13.1

I use KDE and for Skype I installed and use the application pavucontrol to ensure my Mic is not muted. Typically Skype will auto control the Mic record levels.

wrt the Skype installation, to ensure I had all the necessary support packages installed, I followed this guide for openSUSE-13.1 : Skype - openSUSE Wiki
