Since some update printing stops with "Filter failed"

While we do not print every day (or even week), I am sure that printing worked fine since the upgrade 15.6 > 16.0 .

But now:

The first print above was a PDF started from Ocular (on Plasma).
The second one was a (ASCII) text file started from the terminal with the lp command.
Thus the source of the print does not seem to matter.

The printer is USB connected.

But I doubt that the Filter error has anything to do with the printer connection.

I update Leap 16.0 once a week, thus it could be that one of the updates of say the last two weeks introduced this. It is a long list and I see no obvious candidates.

Are there people experiencing the same, ot having suggestions?

Guessing that you use the hplip packages, correct? If so, did that have an update? IIRC there were cups updates, can you check that?

I see nothing cups or hplib in the Myrlyn history of the 2026-06-09 update.

In the 2026-06-02 update I see cups-config, libcups2-32bit (why is that there?), libcups2, cups-client, cups and indeed a whole bunch of hplip packages. So that must be it.

How to research further?

I guess that for a bug we need more info about what Filter?

Nothing in the journal? Changelogs? Does f.e. using hp-setup for deleting, readding the printer maybe work?

Using the Myrlyn Zypp History (now lewarning a great feature!), I see that hplip 3.25.6-bp160.1.1 (and three related packages) was installed in an update 2026-03-18. That one certainly worked OK.

On 2026-06-02 this was changed to 3.26.4-bp160.1.1 and 10 more were involved.

Some HP printers need a extra plugin in Linux, which you have to install manually.

But maybe this is your problem:

Likewise I would log into localhost:631 and just check the correct driver is selected, Printers → Administration and in the drop down select modify and on the last page, search for your printer in the list.

I have a network printer, I didn’t have it installed, but it added fine and installed the plugin without issues…

As said, it worked correct until 2026-06-02. Thus when it needs a “plugin” it would have been there already (for years).

I was already in the cups web-interface earlier, but preferred to use lpstat to easier showing the output.

I also worked through the setup of the printer.
When I use the Maintenance > Print test page, that also ends in a Stopped Filter failed. I also earlier used the Administration > Modify printer and worked through that with the same parameters as there were already.

Why?

Using Ocular can have something to do with Plasma, but using lp is desktop agnostic IMHO. As is using the CUPS web interface.
And I just started a print (text file) from a CLI login (Ctrl-Alt-F3): same problem.

Did you systemctl isolate multi-user.target?

What about the /var/log/cups/{access_log,error_log}'s?

Maybe even run udevadm monitor and unplug/plug the device.

Also check for SELinux or Apparmor errors.
