Since Manifest V2 is being removed on Chromium browsers, what browsers do you recommend?

Hello, I am currently using Brave. Since Brave is based on Chromium, UBlock Origin will stop working. Brave Shields will work but I don’t think it will be as effective as UBlock Origin (unless you prove me wrong).

So, what browsers do you recommend? I heard LibreWolf (based on Firefox) is a good alternative but it drains more battery? I’m not sure, hope I can import my history and bookmarks to that browser…

Don’t know about Librewolf but Waterfox does work on openSUSE and can import stuff from Firefox.

The cache manifest is no longer supported in HTML; you can still point to a manifest in an application but not within HTML. So anything which depends on the cache manifest will only work in an older browser which is not up-to-date.

My experimentation was light, but I think LibreWolf works fine in KDE Tumblweed. However, I don’t know about battery drain.

Librewolf is a privacy-focused similar to Brave that is based off of Firefox.

I personally just use standard Firefox, with Privacy settings put on Strict, with no telemetry sent to Mozilla and uBlock Origin installed. I think Firefox is good enough as is. If you want to lean more on the privacy side, there’s Librewolf. If you want more features, there’s Floorp. There’s a new fork available in Alpha called Zen, but I haven’t tried it yet.

Currently using LibreWolf, too bad the global menu KDE thing isn’t working.

I hope and pray that Firefox doesn’t remove Manifest V2 in the future.

I must admit I had no idea what Manifest V2 is. After asking the Duck I am just a tiny bit better informed. However…

My search brought this. It seems, you can relax for a while.

From what I know, if Manifest V2 is out of the equation, adblockers will cease to work as well as they do currently. It prohibits some of the adblock abilities with new manifest versions potentially from different permissions as to what extensions could do.

Maybe different API with different functions…idk

I really don’t know, but this sounds different:

Firefox, however, has no plans to deprecate MV2 and will continue to support MV2 extensions for the foreseeable future. And even if we re-evaluate this decision at some point down the road, we anticipate providing a notice of at least 12 months for developers to adjust accordingly and not feel rushed.

Yeah I’ve read that but who knows if they do eventually?

If you want something other than Chrome and Firefox, Ladybird is the one to watch out for. Currently in pre-alpha, would take another 2-3 years before being ready.

They said in 2026, the first alpha build will be out, IIRC. That’s a very long time from now. I don’t foresee using Ladybird as a replacement for Firefox or Chrome/Chromium based browsers for a while.

They said they won’t remove it. If they will or not, I don’t know. I can understand that websites need to make money somehow, so I won’t mind seeing ads, just that I wish the ads weren’t so privacy invasive and they weren’t so misleading.

Yeah I agree with the privacy invasive ads. Those are annoying. But yeah if they do happen to remove Manifest V2, would definitely be worried at some point in time.

Not to mention that some ads are like malware.
