Back in January I read some conversations by the openSUSE team that they wouldn’t release openSUSE 12.3 with the 3.8 kernel unless it was fully released (and not just a release candidate). Since it’s now released almost 1 month before openSUSE 12.3 releases, will they switch to that or go with 3.7?

12.3 feature freeze was two or three weeks ago…so, don’t expect
anything released after the feature freeze to be rushed in…
on the other hand, you can install 3.8 on your system today. but you
should know how to unbreak it, if you do.

Why don’t you ask in the Pre-Release/Beta forums? That is where the people knowing best aboput 12.3 are lurking.
And NO, do not double post there the same question. But ask this one to be moved there if you agree with my observation.
Can you please move it there? thanks!
CLOSED. Will be moved

Moved from Install/Boot/Login and open again.

To close out this thread, kernel 3.8 was released after the feature freeze for
12.3. The kernel will be 3.7.
I like to stress the fact that that freeze of 12.3 is not due to the freeze of the thread move. The latter was due to me, the former is due to several time scales.
I understand why they might do that but I think delaying it 1-2 months to switch to 3.8 (which I know they already did some testing with) is worth it since it puts it on a more current kernel for a much longer period of time.

Many of us have been testing 3.8 since rc1. I found a number of problems in the
rc3-rc5 stages, but it runs quite well for me. Be aware, however, that my
workload is representative of only my workload. That is why the number of fixes
to a new “stable” version occur relatively quickly after release as more and
more people start"testing".
If you wait 2 months for 3.8, why not wait another 3 months for 3.9? I have some
great stuff planned for 3.10. Certainly openSUSE 12.3 needs that too! What
about new versions of Gnome or KDE?
We selected an 8-month period for openSUSE. It is tough enough to keep to that
without holding for some particular version of foobar.
To quote Steve Jobs: “Real artists ship.”
You could postpone the release to accommodate the latest kernel, then postpone to let the newest KDE in, then postpone because Firefox 20 will be out soon. Pretty soon, you’ll just never release. The new kernel will surely be available from the build service, if you specifically need 3.8 right away. Otherwise, the next openSUSE will be out nine months from now.
