Hello, to start out with I don’t know much about computers and I’m using my brothers computer that has Opensuse. I am unable to ask him how to do this but I am trying to download programs off the internet.
I click download and software “CrossOver Installer” comes up and it says “Select an application to install.”
What do I pick?
You can search the YaST program list for programs that can be installed from the standard repositories. Start YaST / Software / Software Management and then use the search function to find software that you can install. Additional repositories do exist, but not sure what kind of program that you are looking for.
Well I’m trying to get youtube downloader and I open with CrossOver. It only gives me a list of “Supported Application” (Adoby Acrobat Reader 5.0 etc.)
I already tried to download WINE but I needed the OpenSUSE disks and I my brother has them.
The program WINE is designed to allow Window’s programs to run in Linux, but it is suggested you limit yourself to some important games you just must have and try to find ways to do what you want in Linux with Linux programs. Many things just start working normally in Firefox once you have your multimedia setup properly. Also consider that Windows programs do bring in a risk of Windows problems, like viruses. Its true they have limited effect and only in such programs as Wine, but one reason for using Linux is to get away from the many Viruses and such that effect Windows and not Linux.
You will already have an alternative to Acrobat on the system; perhaps you need to give more detail of what you want. To download WINE, you need to go into YaST>Software repositories and disable the original DVD your brother used. Then YaST will look for it on the web and not on the DVD.
The programs you download depend on the operating system. A program written for the Apple operating system will not run on the Microsoft operating system, etc… Sometimes, different versions of the same program are available, one for each operating system. The Opera browser, for example, has a Microsoft version and a Linux version. When you download, the right version is automatically selected for you.
Once you download it, you have to install it. I use the old rpm program to do the install. It’s much easier if the program is in a Linux repository. Then you can use YAST or zypper. There are probably guides already written here at the OpenSuSE site. For example:

With this being your brothers computer, leaving the installation of programs until you have discussed it with him could be a good idea, he may have a reason to not want this software on his computer.
If you want to download youtube videos, you can do this with Firefox add-ons. Me, I use an add-on called ‘UnPlug’, but I think ‘Download Helper’ (?) is also very popular for this purpose. Add-ons will only affect and be available to your users Firefox profile, but that should be ok.
Installing software in general is done via YaST/Zypper almost exclusively* though. You’ll need root privileges for that. Normally, you’ll also need a good internet connection or the install CD/DVD.
