Silverlight not up to date?

I have installed silverlight via software installer but when I try to view catch up tv via channel nine MSN it says that silverlight may not be up to date and it does not show the video.
Is this a known issue or is there a fix please.
I run Opensuse 11.4 64 bit kde, and I have tried Google Chrome and Firefox.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

There is no silverlight for Linux.
Only Moonlight (open source implementation).

Moonlight is not 100% compatible with Silverlight, especially newest versions.
Also it lacks some closed source codecs (they can be installed as external codec pack).

A URL please
Just so we are on the same page

Get Silverlight | Microsoft Silverlight Click the button at this link to be taken to open source moonlight.
If you could send the details of external codec pack to correct these issues I would be grateful.
Many thanks

I’m not using silverlight here is a quote from wikipedia

Moonlight (runtime) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Although Moonlight is free software, the final version will use binary-only audio and video codecs provided by Microsoft which will be licensed for use with Moonlight only when used as a browser plugin (see above). The Windows media pack is not distributed together with the Moonlight plugin but the first time when media content in Silverlight is detected the user will be prompted to download the pack containing the codecs used in Silverlight directly from Microsoft.
Self built versions can still use the FFmpeg library and there is discussion about adding GStreamer support as an alternative to using Microsoft’s binary codecs for those who wish to use GStreamer instead and also for use when used outside of a browser.

but also…

The version of Moonlight that will be available direct from Novell will have access to licensed closed source media codecs provided free of charge by Microsoft. Third-party distributions of Moonlight will only be able to play non-patent encumbered media like Vorbis, Theora and Ogg. To support other formats, the distributors will have to choose from a few licensing options:

Ok thanks I’ll give that a try.

You can try to install Mono and Silverlight from this repository

Index of /repositories/Mono/openSUSE_11.4/x86_64

Or even directly from Novell repository for openSUSE.

Index of /pub/mono/download-stable/openSUSE_11.4

Mono is now developed by Xamarin, not Novell, but the newest version of Mono, 2.10.1, is not yet available for OpenSUSE .

I very much appreciate your help, that is excellent.

Many thanks

I downloaded the file for Silerlight desktop 64b and it gave the following error on install
“Download (curl) error for ‘http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.4/rpm/x86_64/java-1_6_0-openjdk-1.6.0.0_b22.1.10.2-4.3.1.x86_64.rpm’:
Error code: User abort
Error message: connect() timed out!”
I have had this error come up many random times during updates, is it something wrong with my system setup or just something with the download?

I sorted out the install problem, it turned out that I needed to install Iced tea to allow the pullin-flash-player to install, then I had to uninstall iced-tea to allow the sun java to keep working. Anyway I managed to get it to install but the issue with Moonlight and Silverlight still remains, many thanks for spending the time to have a look at this for me.
If anything changes soon hopefully we will have more compatibility with Moonlight and Silverlight.

I think you mean from here do you?
channelnine.ninemsn.com.au/

I have been to this site before. It’s generally horrible to use and totally Microsoft oriented.
Personally I never use Silverlight, though where I have tested it in the past for people. It doesn’t typically work that well. I think Channel Nine offers downloads too doesn’t it?
It doesn’t help that I’m getting error messages about being from some alien planet and cannot watch their TV

Yes thats the one but we use the catchup TV at fixplayvideo Its a totally MSN oriented site (Unfortunately) but the wife likes some shows on it. I am sure that a few months ago this worked on Linux but now it doesnt. I am not aware of downloads being available for these shows as they are shown on Free to Air TV her in Australia and would have copyright restrictions but they have only recently allowed viewing them online. Which we love but since they started (About 12 months ago) some of the local channels have dropped their streaming quality making the show quite pixelated. They obviously are scared of new technology here, probably seeing the increase in use and made it of lesser quality so we wouldnt get to comfortable.

Some time today I’ll look in to this for you on a test machine.

But can you tell me if you have installed the following from the repos:
libmoon0
moonlight-plugin

Yes both installed, many thanks for taking the time to check this out.

I’m pretty sure you’ll need firefox 3.
That option should be in the Mozilla repo

and the plugin etc, I would try the latest from here

I have Firefox 5.0, do I need to down grade it?

Yes you are right its Firefox 3 or Chrome 4. I have Firefox 5 and Chrome 12
I dont want to down grade at this stage, I’ll wait until there may be a Moonlight upgrade.
Thanks

I posted a repo for the moonlight upgrade
It’s just that Microsoft Silverlight isn’t keeping up with the browser progression.

You could try rolling firefox back and see if it works with the current plugins. If not try the repo I listed to get the newer plugins.
