significan fan use after Tumbleweed update with tracker

On my ASUS Zenbook laptop, I just updated Tumbleweed to VERSION=“20220324”. A few minutes after I rebooted, the laptop fan started running hard, even though I am not doing anything on the laptop. No programs are open, just the laptop sitting there.

My desktop is KDE plasma, the latest version that came with the tumbleweed update. I have gnome also installed, but I only sometimes use it. I am not fully comfortable with adjusting gnome settings like I am with KDE.

Looking at the system, the program tracker-extract-3 shows a CPU use of 13% and shared memory of around 318MB. I don’t remember seeing tracker taking up a significant amount of CPU use previously.

Any ideas? Is this a bug in the latest update?

It seems to have stopped now… I guess it just needed to re-index some files.

@techtribe:

Does the system partition use the Btrfs Filesystem?
Are the systemd Btrfs housekeeping services enabled?

  • “btrfs-balance.timer”
  • “btrfs-scrub.timer”
  • “btrfs-trim.timer”

TW snapshot 20220324 included the Gnome 42 update, and a new version of tracker3. As you have noted, it may just have needed to re-index some files.

Actually it was the 20220323 snapshot…
