Sig 6 Yast Crash During Install: Noob fixes something!

Hi, all new to the forum and to Linux in general.

I love to start off having something positive to contribute so:

Problem: During installation of OpenSUSE, the installer crashes. If an error message is apparent, it will be to the effect that “Yast got a signal 6…” the rest of the message wasn’t readable, the computer was in the process of going down.

After this, the installer will crash, and the system will go down.

It will seem as though there is no way to install the program. This issue is common to LiveCD installs as well as full DVD installs, without regard to whether the media was burned at home or purchased (as in this month’s Linux Pro Mag special)
**

**This issue may be specific to laptops. **

What worked for me:**

  1. Turn off ALL power management options in BIOS
  2. When you run the installer DVD, you will see a prompt at the bottom of the screen after the word “boot:”

If you type anything on this screen, it will appear there. You can just start typing, you don’t have to select it.

Type “acpi=off”

Now select “Installation” from the menu and run the installer again.

This got me thru the installation process with no more hiccups.

This worked for me on an Asus A4Ka, ATH64, ATI9700, NForce sound and chipset.

If I have learned nothing else in my first month with Linux, it’s that Linux No Likee ACPI. After combing thru 1000 forum posts, it seems like “acpi=off” is the WD40 of squeaky Linux issues.

Other things to try:

  1. During the installer, there is a box marked “use auto configuration.” Uncheck this box.

  2. During boot, I noticed a line saying "if you have driver problems, try booting with “brokenmodule=drivername” If you have any clue what that means, then why not?

Good luck!

Idea: If anyone else tries this and it works, attach your system specs to this thread and make it a tag, so other people with this problem can find it easily. Also, if you do something else and it works, attach that too!

Thanks!

First who invents ACPI ?
Second what you read is the cases that it went wrong with ACPI and a certain version of Linux
What you do not read are the cases that there are
no problem at all.
And that is of course normal if I do not have a problem with my hardware or software so do not have a reason to ask a question on a forum
Second how may postings are double because the user is a member of more than one forum .
