Right, but just to clarify that ‘usb-devices’ should still have reported the chipset/bus details, even with no driver support. It was as if the device was disabled somehow.

Well, maybe, just maybe there might be a way to get this problem fixed
depending on your running kernel.
The link shows a fix of one single line of code, so that should be doable even
for a non-(kernel)-hacker.
What kernel are you running?
uname -r
AK

Addendum:
That fix was added upstream for kernel 4.7.x (and backported to at least 4.4.x,
just checked), so with any openSUSE-Kernel > 4.7 driver support will not be the
problem.
Did you read the second page of the thread you linked?
The user “hecke” reports how he got that device running on openSUSE
(Tumbleweed) with Kernel 4.7 and what user space tools were needed in which
version to get the device running with ModemManager.
rpm -qa --queryformat=’%{name}-%{version}
’ “ModemManager” “libqmi-glib”
“libmm-glib” “libmbim-glib”
libmbim-glib4-1.14.0
libqmi-glib5-1.16.0
libmm-glib0-1.6.0
ModemManager-1.6.0
These are -according to the linked thread- the minimal versions needed.

Tumbleweed the latest everything so maybe faulty unit from China with love.
Thanks for voicing my suspicions, I’m no expert, but learning.
Hi
So have you checked the system BIOS for any wwan settings? Have you disabled the wireless in the BIOS and see if it fires up?
I have just removed device & boot/shutdown finger scan is back to normal. I tried blocking wireless with RFKill to no avail, no WWAN settings in basic BIOS, not sure can turn wireless on and off either. Ordered another at a much more reasonable price, we will see if it behaves the same. China bit of an expensive return, village PO shut today, but will have to insure.
Thanks for everyone’s time/help, kinda exciting swapping out hardware!
Take II BABY!!!
2nd card just works. Working pull shipped inland, maybe it a firmware issue? Intel can only upgrade through Windows, yet not entirely automatic as need to edit a few text files & reboot. I would not know. Maybe (supposedly) spanking new from China a whole headache. Return shipping not economical but original price too much really.
Welcome Linux, bye bye Windows 10!
Appears to work but never actually connects. Just got round to testing with good signal, rfkill says softblocked but still no connection when unblock;

I’m not familiar with this hardware at all, but perhaps firmware needs to be installed first?

Thx. I will install Windows on spare disk & do this. Gives me something to do. Not impossible, but sigh. The day that Linux is mainstream, it is coming right?!? Ha ha.
Don’t support (buy) hardware that does not support Linux
Installed 10 to spare 120GB SSD sat around & upgraded firmware. Might help if plug antenna cables in?!? Sigh…
All worky now!
As I had hoped. Glad to read this.
