I seem to have a problem shutting down now from Gnome and even the console. A window flashes up when I choose shutdown then vanishes? Is there an rpm for the shutdown function that I can reinstall?
Also …Gnome is not starting on bootup…I know I can use startx and I think there is a configuration file to make this happen automatically but don’t want to poke around without being sure of what I am doing.
Any help appreciated I am using SLE 10
Would an upgrade help? Is there an easy way to do this?
You can use the verification features of rpm to detect corruption.
As for GNOME not starting on boot up, try entering a 5 on boot to ensure system is trying to start up graphically. If that makes a difference, then going into YaST and setting system default run level to 5 from 3 would avoid need to use startx.
MOre likely there’s some config or driver issue.
I have not had a chance to make the changes suggested yet but now know that I can only shutdown as root …I have to log out and log in to root to shut the machine down…would this suggest anything other than the config issue mentioned by robopensuse ? Cheers
Will try the yast option now.
Right just tried changing the default runtime to 5…all working a treat and no need for any messing about in the command line…true it is not my favourite if I am not sure what I am doing.
Anyway all worked out nice…
