Whenever I close Skypeforlinux either from its menu or from its icon, its screen closes but two processes keep running when I check “top”. What can I do short of shutting down or killing the processes from “top” to fully stop it.

I just logged out from Skype while do not see it running anywere.
try this find ~/ -mmin -3 | grep -i skyp
BTW adjust the time to suit you.
Well that tells me what files are being used, but it doesn’t stop Skype from running in the background. At least not on my desktop. I have to kill two processes before it stops.
Solution found. There is an option in the Skype settings under General that was set at installation to “Keep Skype running”. That closed the GUI but kept the rest running in background.

Self currently Skype shows
General
“START-UP AND CLOSE”
“Automatically start Skype” is OFF
“Launch Skype in the Background” is ON
“Upon closing, keep Skype running” is ON
BTW am not using permanent Skype number, as was more for back-up.
Often change these to OFF during work times, except when pre-arranged calls In/Out, so can ignore other Skype messages while my other phones kept a lot busier…
