Sometimes the hard drives power off as it’s shutting down, but the machine stays on. Doesn’t always happen, just occasionally.
Have you checked your power settings could be set to hibernate or suspend. It could also be hardware related but Can’t really tell without more information. Try running memtest and see if your hard drive manufacture offers any kind of diagnostic software. Once you rule out hardware then you can find out what maybe causing it via software.
Is your harddisk really powered of and not spinning anymore? I had the problem that the read/write head was going in parking position which was recognized by a little sound but the platters where spinning on.
Try to figure that out and i can tell you it is a hdd failure which most happens with Samsung HDDs.
I’m getting a “segmentation fault” error, and the drives are definitely powering down.
The machine is just over 5 years old (HP Pavillion) and up until a few days ago was running XP and didn’t have any problems. The primary drive is brand new and the secondary is a few months old, so they should be ok. I installed more RAM 8 months ago and, again, wasn’t having any problems. Sometimes it shuts down completely, sometimes not. Since it isn’t on the HCL list I guess I should consider myself fortunate that openSUSE even installed. This may be a result of Linux being more picky about the hardware. I’m definitely not reverting back to Windows, but I would at least like some consistency. Thanks for the replies.

If your talking about your system not shutting down, there is a bug
in the 2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop kernel that posts a segmentation fault
on shutdown and then I have to use the power button to power off.
This is Novel Bugzilla Bug 578222. Marked as fixed and will be in
next kernel update. Soon I hope.

sounds like the latest kernel bug…use the forums advanced search
function and i bet you find LOTS of shut down issues in the last two
weeks…look using “bug” in the string and you will probably find the
bug number…and, can track it like all the others on Bugzilla

I see it’s been resolved, but probably just not distributed…yet. I normally use the search feature, and thought I used it for this. I’ll make sure next time to do an advanced search. Thanks!
