I surfed a bit and read that there are available for GNU/Linux stripped down browser(s) whose only purpose is to run WhatsApp.

It is not that hard to “natify” a web-app. Most “apps” like WhatsApp, Jitsi(!) are just use electron to “appify” a web-page/web-app, running it in an embedded browser. F.e. Jitsi shows a menu bar, with “Open New Window” in it. Clicking it opens a Chrome window.
