There is definitely no official open source client for WhatsApp. All of them are just wrappers that internally use WhatsApp Web, i.e. the browser version.

Indeed. We are a bit off topic, but this was news to me.

I surfed a bit and read that there are available for GNU/Linux stripped down browser(s) whose only purpose is to run WhatsApp.

I have not searched for, nor played with such myself.

It is not that hard to “natify” a web-app. Most “apps” like WhatsApp, Jitsi(!) are just use electron to “appify” a web-page/web-app, running it in an embedded browser. F.e. Jitsi shows a menu bar, with “Open New Window” in it. Clicking it opens a Chrome window.
