Should I still be using Xfce?

Hello, My name is Jake

Before I get started id like to say: “First Post!! wooo”.

Ok now for the question:

I have been using different linux distro’s for a while now, so I have tried out different windows managers. I have found so far I like Xfce (tested on Xubuntu however the CDC look would be cool to). However after researching this further I realized that the people who are using and recommending xfce are the people who have generally older computers.

I am running a laptop, Asus G1 (installed 4 G of ram on it) so I have a generally new computer, duo core, 3G ram being addressed, geforce go 7700 graphics… etc. and I was wondering if I still should be using Xfce or if I should be using a more resource heavy windows environment.

What I use linux for:
( to help get a feel of my day to day on here ).
: I am a web designer, so I use eclipse and photoshop everyday. I also game a bit on wine (starcraft, diablo II mainly), and use limewire for downloading songs. I have a mp3 device I pluign and use as a UMS.

Only problems I have had with Xfce:

: Pictures generally look choppy when loading in firefox 3. (tested on Xubuntu)

Thanks ( cant wait to hear back and install openSUSE 11.0 :D)

~ Jake

I think that it depends on what you like. If you want a desktop that looks more like OS X, then use GNOME and if you want what that looks more like Windows, then take KDE. I use KDE 4.1.1 because I like how you can customize it. here’s my desktop:

It all depends on what you like. If you choose KDE, then you will like this website:

Eyecandy for your KDE-Desktop - KDE-Look.org

P.S. You should use FrostWire and not LimeWire since it’s like LW PRO but free.

haha thanks, didnt really answer my Q but I think I might try your KDE 4.1.1

Also I do have limewire pro fyi :stuck_out_tongue:

Honestly it is up to you. Personally, I use XFCE or LXDE on all of my
computers which range from Pentium 3’s up to Athlon 66 X2’s with 4GB
ram. I’m not a fan of the KDE3 series, KDE4 is coming along but not yet
there for my needs, Gnome is alright but there is something there too
that draws me away that I can’t put my finge on. Point is, use the DE/WM
that you like.
