Shockwave/Flash in 13.1 (again, I'm sure)

What’s up with Opera and Google with their Flash plugin implementation? I’m new at Linux and am having a heck of a time trying to play Flash media from within these browsers. Anyone care to venture an offer of assistance to this poor soul who isn’t that schooled in multimedia? Thanks.

Assuming you followed the mutlimedia guide
https://forums.opensuse.org/blogs/caf4926/opensuse-13-1-multi-media-restricted-format-installation-guide-149/

And ran all updates
It should just work

Well, that guide doesn’t take flash-player into account, does it?

Please open YaST->Software Management, search for “flash-player” and make sure it is installed.

You might want to check again LOL

You’re right of course, sorry!

But I didn’t see it now either. Had to use Firefox’s search function to spot it…

Chromium uses it’s own flash implementation (if installed): chromium-pepper-flash (AFAIK it’s built in in the google-chrome -the non-open-source version-).
FYI: to use Silverlight (Netflix e.a.), search software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 13.1 for “pipelight”.

Well, I’m over here learning (because things aren’t working right for me.) :expressionless:

I’ve reinstalled 13.1 and am starting virgin with the guide. During the first round I saw a few errors but I had installed Fluendo’s DVD Player and Codec pack. I still would care to utilize the purchase but if the free codecs are available and work, then I’m all for getting a refund on their product.

If you hear a muffled scream coming from somewhere off in the distance, it’s probably me pulling my hair again. Thanks for the continued educational resource everyone.

uninstallable providers: gstreamer-plugins-base-1.2.1-2.2.i586[packman]
Solution 1: Following actions will be done:
do not install gstreamer-plugins-bad-1.2.1-5.6.i586
do not install gstreamer-plugins-bad-orig-addon-1.2.1-5.6.i586
do not install gstreamer-plugins-good-extra-1.2.1-2.1.i586
do not install gstreamer-plugins-ugly-orig-addon-1.2.1-2.1.i586
Solution 2: install gstreamer-plugins-base-1.2.1-2.2.i586 (with vendor change)
openSUSE –> PackMan :: Startseite
Solution 3: break gstreamer-plugins-bad-1.2.1-5.6.i586 by ignoring some of its dependencies

Choose Solution 2.
And if you get another conflict, choose the Solution with vendor change to Packman as well.

I chose all the vendor change options and even, just now, reran the original command only to have an indication that all packages were already installed and there was nothing to do. Still no joy. Hmm, I remain baffled. Sorry for the problems but I look forward to a resolution in the near future.

Which CPU do you have?

lscpu

The latest flash-player does not work on older CPUs.

Thanks for the continued support!

No problem.
I would need the output of this as well:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

But I think your Athlon XP 3000+ does only support SSE, not SSE2 that is needed for flash-player 11.
Thank Adobe for that. (well, they have abandoned Linux now completely anyway…)

So you would have to install version 10, you can get a package here:
http://software.opensuse.org/download.html?project=home%3Acornelisbb&package=flash-player
I don’t know if that works though, but I guess it should.

To be safe, uninstall your “flash-player” package before you install the new (well, old actually  ) one:

sudo zypper rm flash-player

Oh so close. I get now the spinning icon in the middle of the player but it just never seems to resolve into the video I want to watch. Is there anything else you can suggest?

As expected, there’s only sse in that list, no sse2.
So install the older flash-player like I wrote in the previous post.

I did that already. Arrgh.

Would a processor upgrade on this old box suffice so I could use my new Linux distro? (Hopes with hands clasped in front of him.)

You could try to install the package from 11.4, maybe that works (it worked for me back then… ):

sudo rpm -i --force http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/11.4/repo/non-oss/suse/i586/flash-player-10.2.152.26-2.1.i586.rpm

You can use your new Linux distro with the processor you have. Only flash-player 11 doesn’t work…

I’m not aware of CPU’s for your Sockel A that do support SSE2, sorry.

Hmm. I rebooted and there she was, working a treat as is. What exactly is it that you are suggesting in the above? From openSUSE 11.4? That isn’t necessary because of the present config working apparently but I was curious as to your thinking.

If it is working now, stay with the version you have…

I was of the impression it would still not work, that’s why I suggested the package from openSUSE 11.4.
