You need to turn on “lpd print service” on Windows VISTA. (settings>cont. panel>prog. and features.
Chose the “turn windows features on off” > “print services” check the box for “LPD Print
Service”.) Now follow the Swerdna HowTo.
Yes, your more or less on the right track

I had no intent to imply otherwise. The OP just seemed to be confused with the term:
“Print Services for Unix”. Please accept my apology.

now that the windows workstation sharing a Windows printer to Linux clients has been done from the article by turning on the LPD print service . ive been reading and how do i add the windows network printer in yast- printer?
i’m trying to locate my hp 842c printer on my windows vista from opensuse but it wont locate it in yast printer. i tried several options. do i have to open a port or something on my windows firewall and my internet security firewall program?
the ip address for my opensuse machine is in my windows software program’s firewall
i have samba working and can see windows shared files and folders from opensuse

Try using Cups directly to add the printer as suggested by Swerdna. You can connect to CUPS at http://localhost:631 ( You may be required to use https://localhost:631/admin to connect CUPS Admin
page).
At least to start, use the IP of the Windows machine to set up the printers URL in CUPS.

I tried localhost:631 but i type in my username and password from when i installed opensuse 12.1 and cant enter, says forbidden unable to add printer.
I looked on CUPS to register for and account and get a username and password but i cant find how to sign up for an account in cups.
so i gave up and tried to find a printer in yast

To authorize on cups the username is: root ; the password is your root’s password. (By default
root’s password is the same password as that of the user you created when you installed openSUSE, it
may have been changed though.)
PS. Did you share the printer on Windows?

This is all covered there. As a quick overview, you need to choose add printer in CUPS. Enter a
URL, then the model and a driver. Do not expect the printer to be discovered automatically and
installed without some effort on your part. Depending on the model of your printer, you may even
need to install the drivers before you can add the printer.

Glad to see it all works for you. Enjoy printing. Either driver should work. hpijs seems to be the
most common choice for users of HP printers and seems to be the most robust.
