Several Video Issues with new install

Hi all,

I’ve decided to take the plunge and learn how to use Linux with openSUSE 11.4 64bit. However, I have had quite a few problems with this new system. I cannot get the VGA resolution of my monitor to stick, after every restart it reverts back to 1024x768. The task bar does not take on the default gray color of the rest of the windows, but instead is black and very hard to read and which extends far beyond the viable space of my monitor hiding the notification area and clock. when I change the resolution to my default of 1680x1050 the task bar doesn’t scale and only takes up 3/4 of the bottom of my screen. The VGA boot mode is set to 0x31a and I can’t find any list with a VGA code that I can use, or if it will even solve my problem. I’ve seen several mentions of menu.lst but cannot seem to open this file, I’ve tried using emacs, but it comes up as a blank document. I am completely new to Linux so I have no idea what I’m doing right or wrong, but I really want to learn my way around the system and how to do things.

Thanks in advance.
