Setup Software for HP Smart Tank 7603

My old HP printer died, so went and bought an HP Smart Tank 7603, did that because HP has been rather Linux friendly in the past, not now.
I have to download a setup software which only available for windows.
Connected the USB cable to my system, nothing happens.
Does anyone knows where I can get a linux version of that software?
Searches on the net yields no result.
Am I cooked for a bad purchase

The 7603 should support driverless printing. HP lists both Apple AirPrint and Mopria support for this model.

I’d try connecting the printer to the network first, and then let CUPS discover it. More info here…

If you want to use the printer via USB connectivity, using HPLIP may be the simplest route. Driverless USB printing is also possible with some printers, but HPLIP might be the best choice for this scenario.

You can install it with
sudo zypper in hplip
then run sudo hp-setupto configure.

Having to reply to myself (not finding the edit button for my original post)
Downloaded the HP Smart app from Google play store adde my new printer and that ran the setup for the printer. I have its ip address so tomorrow will see if hp-setup finds it, if not I have IP address. Now how to mark this as the solution?

That’s up to you if you consider it solved. Did you get HPLIP configured on openSUSE successfully?

These days driverless printing is convenient and adequate for most.

Unfortunately no. Need to open ports on the firewall.
I used the commands for Firewalld and opened ports 9100 tcp/udp , does not work.
I would need to know what ports to open using OpenSUSE firewall for this printer.
going to bed, will see what’s up with that tomorrow

No, there is no need to open that port for printing or discovery when network connected. For discovery, ensure ‘mdns’ is allowed. Alternatively, you can just disable the firewall while doing the configuration.

I installed sane-airscan, disabled the firewall, and the printer was configured.
then executed " scanimage -L".
Reloaded the firewall and Skanpage found the scanner.
Now I am seeing this behavior, I can print and scan now with the firewall active. If I go to the printer settings and try to print a test page a single line is printed and the printer spools all the paper in the tray. I have to cancelthe print job. Now this was the behavior of the printer that I replaced. The difference is that with the old printer that was the behavior with all print jobs.
Any ideas?

Somehow, you tried to run both commands together? The driverless command was supposed to be run separately.

Anyway, the lpstat output confirms that you have HPLIP configured for printing.

Let’s first see what CUPS reports when the test page is printed.

Enable CUPS debug logging with sudo cupsctl --debug-logging

Then try the test page again. After cancelling the job, check the CUPS log with…

grep -Ei "error|filter" /var/log/cups/error_log

The resulting output may show where the print job is going wrong.

Also , if you wish to try driverless printing instead, I can guide you through that. It does require mdns to be allowed through the firewall for discovery to work. You’d need to share your current firewall config…

sudo firewall-cmd --get-active-zones
sudo firewall-cmd --list-all

It shows the filter chain being used, and the hp backend seems to have an issue. Not sure what the underlying cause is though, it might take a bug report to resolve.

Anyway, you mentioned that driverless discovers your printer as a driverless printer. You could try using that instead of the HPLIP printer. Open an application, select the driverless printer from its printer menu, and try printing a single page.

I don’t see driverless in the printer settings of Libreoffice writer. Even if I use Kate the other printer option that I see is Smart_Tank 7600. Printing to that gives no result.

Thanks for the update. Glad to know driverless printing is working for you. I wouldn’t bother with the HPLIP configuration unless you need it for some particular print option.
