setup of eth0

asus K60IJ intel 4400 dual-core 4gb ram
trying to setup suse 11.2 64bit as dual boot. works fine with win7 in dual boot and system boots great. been following forums to setup wireless. after doing all term commands, it see’s both built in wireless (atheros ar9285) on the pci-e and the usb verizon broadband modem as (curitel brand modem). after checking kernal dmesg, it see’s devices but looking at usr/sbin/iwconfig, it see’s no eth0. checked at the asus website and see nothing on getting any kind of ethernet drivers. how and where can i find these. thanks

Have you been to Yast - Network Devices - Network Settings
to configure eth0

The “w” in iwconfig stands for wireless. You should not expect to see any
ethernet device there.

What does “/sbin/lspci -nnk” show for your ethernet device?

have tried a couple of times. it tells me that networkmanager is in control, but i haven’t been able to access that program. also don’t really know how to do it the manual way.

If you are using ethernet rather than wireless, then when you start the network settings in Yast, switch the setting from network manager to traditional ifup.
Then look at configuring.
Normally, wired ethernet just works without any fiddling though.

Post this from a terminal - as asked for by Larry

/sbin/lspci -nnk

here is what i’ve got from my findings:

thanks for any help. i hope you have enough info, i’m re-learning linux after many years and forgot most everything i knew. a new newby.

no, none of this is wired. it will all be wireless. the built in wireless would work if i can’t get verizon broadband going.

Sorry
The thread title says ‘eth0’ which is for wired ethernet.

Your devices are:

/sbin/lspci -nnk
02:00.0 network controller [0280]: atheros communications inc. AR9285 wireless network adapter (pci-express) [168c:002b]
subsystem:device [1a3b:1089]
kernel driver in use: ath9k
03:00.0 ethernet controller [0200]: attansic technology corp. atheros ar8121/ar8113/ar8114 pci-e ethernet controller [1969:1026] (rev b0)

kernel driver in use: ATLIE

Wireless info here
HCL/Network Adapters (Wireless) - openSUSE

So you should be using Network Manager normally, but some users do use ifup for wireless too.

I’m sure this: usb verizon broadband modem as (curitel brand modem) Is a pain in the butt - Someone in the US may be able to help. Ideally, you should use a proper router. These USB devices they give away with New Services are next to useless.
