Setting up Yast Installation server

Hi guys,

I am new to OpenSuse. I have worked on debian based systems up to now.

I have following questions.

  1. Is it possible to setup a Yast Installation server with OpenSuse, I mean without purchasing/installing Enterprise stuff ?

  2. If yes, how ?

thanks & regards,
Hardik

Bump !

Does any body know ?

Hi Hardik,

SLES/D is the only one where this option is built-in in YaST as far as I know.
You don’t need to purchase or register SLED/SLES to get things setup and running.

The product won’t expire and the only thing you will mis are automated updates (30 days after install).

So I would recommend setting up a SLES 10 SP2 server for this. It will make setting up your install sources a breeze.
As I note : you will only have the ’ Install Server ’ option, but not the YUM central update service, this does need a subscription.

You can get the SLEx downloads here :

Hope that helps,
Wj

Thanks, Magic31

What will be the basic difference between, Install Server and YUM Central Update Server ?

What I can guess is the first one will only work for installation and the other will also work for updating the software to the latest versions.

Am I right ?

Hardik

Your guess is correct

The update service is dynamic and gets patches and related updates to in return centrally offer it to your clients/servers.

Install sources are static, but that does not mean you can’t update the contents manually.

I promise this is the last question about this…

please, correct me if I am wrong

Does that mean, that I install SLES 10 SP2 on the server I want to turn into the repository and also on production server which I want to update from this repos ?

After that I can manually update the repository server, and again update my production servers from the repos.

For me it is important that my repository server is only directly connected to the internet (i.e. Yast repos) and production servers will just get packages from my repository server.

Thanks, Magic31 for being so patient with me.

Hardik

In theory yes… but it can be quite a job to keep all repros up to date manually.

If this is for a business environment it should be worth the $350 yearly subscription. But for this find a friendly Novell presales channel near you… At this point they should be able to give you better advice then I can as it’s getting too specific for me to answer correctly

The forums are for asking, so don’t hesitate to do so…

Cheers,
