Setting up Scanning with Networked HP Color LaserJet 2840 MFP

I need to get the scanning facility of my networked printer working. I am running 86x64bit openSUSE 13.2 with KDE 4.14.8 desktop.
Hplip printer driver is installed and printing works well.
Using Yast to try and install the scanner the device cannot be found. I get an error message about a net metadriver as follows:-

file:///home/alastair/Downloads/Scanner_Error_Msg2.png

Help please posting screen shot!!!

If I wait a while I get an installation screen which allows me to edit the “not installed” device and all the drivers available are for correct printer series but seem to be USB.

Now this is sinister because HP in their wisdom have not written any 64 bit drivers for this printer and also state that it will not scan over network using windoze 7 drivers, only if connected by USB.

Does this mean I am stuffed or is there some other software out there that I can use. (Scanning is possible over network using Win XP and this is what I used to use but the XP machine is on the way out.)

I am going right off HP!!!

If it does not work in Windows 7 over the network I doubt if it will work for Linux. But Maybe someone else has better info. Plug it into a USB port maybe???

Hi
It would appear it’s well supported… If you open the hp-toolbox and
select scan?

Scanning indeed works for me (13.2, x86_64, KDE 4.14.8) and has worked as far as I can remember (11.1?) with my HP Color LaserJet 2840. Last couple of openSuSE release I sometimes do have to close the “hp-systray” and restart via “hp-toolbox” before the scanning component is properly recognized (although now and then “Diagnose HPLIP driver” also works), but that might be because I don’t have my printer turned on all the time.

@Budgie2: I assume you have “xsane” installed?

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for the link. I had already found it and it gave me hope but then I got stuck. HP-toolbox? Where do I find that. I have the blue HP logo in my tray and that gives me access to HP Device Manager. Is that what you mean?
HP Device Manager has a scan button but that doesn’t find the scanner. Will keep trying but if you have any further info please post.

Hi Mark,
Many thanks for the encouraging reply. I assume you are networked to your printer not USB connected.
Following your post I installed xsane but cannot open it to set it up because the first action is to search for scanner and this stalls the process as nothing is found.
You are using terms I have still to learn such as hp-systray and hp-toolbox. All I can see is HP Device Manager. If you have time please could you give me the “real beginners” guide as I must get this working soon.
Regards and thanks,
Budgie2

Try launching the utility from a terminal window

hp-toolbox

and follow the prompts given.

Hi Deano,
Did as you suggest and get the following

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.14.6)
HP Device Manager ver. 15.0

warning: Reportlab not installed. Fax coverpages disabled.
warning: Please install version 2.0+ of Reportlab for coverpage support.

Also HP Device Manager window opened but still nothing detects the scanner. I could try uninstalling xsane but other post suggests that is prerequisite.
Am I being dense here? Surely if HP Devive Manager sees the printer and fax it should see the scanner too. Further suggestions most welcome.

Hey Budgie2,

Perhaps scanning doesn’t work while connected via USB.

Just connected my hpclj2840 via USB to another openSuSE 13.2 configuration, installed “hplip” and “xsane”. Next “lsusb” immediately recognized the printer, but “hp-toolbox” only did after I configured it via cups (http://localhost:631), without the scanning feature though.

However, as soon as I added a second instance of the same printer as a network device, the scan option appeared as well.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,
Think we may have wires crossed. I have no USB connection. Printer in different room so only a network connection.
Have you ever succeeded in getting your HP Color LaserJet 2840 to scan with a network only connection, ie no USB at all?

Hmm, you mentioned USB, sorry for the confusion … My default working configuration is/was network connected and scanning already works there for years. I indeed can’t get it to work via USB on a second -clean configuration, updated- 13.2 machine, but I only had to install “hplip” and “xsane” to get “hp-toolbox” to recognize the scanning functionality again of the hpclj2840 as a network printer.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for clearing that up. So you are doing what I am trying to do with essentially the same kit. If you have time I would be grateful if you are willing to go into more detail but I am moving out of my knowledge comfort zone already. Only one other question before digging deeper. Is your openSUSE 13.2 machine 32 or 64 bit?

Budgie2
