I’m looking to find a way to ensure that what I’m hearing from my computer is Bit Perfect, and can also play 24/96khz files.
Audio on Linux has always confused me, so I’m not entirely sure where to start. So if we were to say I’d be starting from a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.3, where would I have to go to achieve my goal with an M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 Sound Card (ICE1712 Chipset)?
I’ve googled around a bit for answers, but I find convoluted setups, from a bunch of different starting points. So hopefully this will be able to guide me from the “beginning”.
I have experience with OpenSUSE, Gentoo, Ubuntu and CentOS.
The thing that confuses me is just that ALSA handles mostly everything, but then there’s Pulse which I think also takes some others and can handle them. Jack is there too, which I heard is great for quality, there’s ESD, and Xine, etc. etc. Like, why are there so many? So by the time I have everything up and running I have no idea what I’ve installed, or where I stand.
I can’t help wrt what you have installed, nor where you stand (you need to check what you have installed - which can be done easily enough), but in terms of what these various sound daemons/servers are associated with, I wrote a guide a few years ago, which is now here: SDB:Sound concepts - openSUSE Wiki
If you want to start(with opensuse) oldcpu knows about intel drivers. I use AMD. I can help you about installastion, modify but I can not find these drivers.
