seting up internet

while installing opensuse10.3 it asked me to enter details for setting up internet(ip,net max, gateway). i just skipped it

but now i am regretting can anyone tell me how to set up net,

i just have following values

  • Ip
  • Subnet mask
  • Gateway
  • DNS

use yast -network - network settings

you can configure you device there. But mostly the settings are DHCP and it does the rest for you.

Maybe if you specify what make/type you have we can help if you can’t get anywhere in yAST.

Sorry caf4926, but he says he has all the values, so he is not using DHCP, but a fixed IP address, etc.

But, yes, it can all be done in YaST as caf4926 says.

Here’s a pictorial for setting up a wired ethernet card, including the option for a fixed IP:
HowTo Configure a network card in Suse/openSUSE 10, 11 for LAN and Internet Access.

I have tried that actually during installation of suse i asked me to enter it but i skipped it.By the way thank swerdna but i have alreday seen it .

I also tried this
**1 ** ipconfig <ip> <mask>
**2 ** route add defalut gw <gateway>
**3 ** echo “dnsserver” >> /etc/resolv.conf
Line 2, 3 worked but line 1(“ipconfig”) gave me command not found.

My service provider asked me to do this
**1 ** setup
**2 ** it seams a window will pop up i have to select network config. and enter my details.
**3 ** ipconfig <ip>
“Setup” gave command not found.

Actually when i select go to yast>>network…>> my card and try to enter details it asks for me

  • subnet mask
  • ip
  • hostname

And i dont have a hostname I even asked my service provider(customer care) they too are clueless about hostname

One suggested me to try adding my gateway but that useless

BTW(dont bother regarding this)
Actually once i config ip i need to download a software from my service providers site. now i need to log-in into that to be able to use net. But to use the service providers site i should have configured my network that’s why i skipped during installation .Without the software/client I am only able to access my service providers site but for that my network has to be proper in the first case. Please just forget about this para in case you are confused and just tell me where to add the ip details

You can set up any name for the network hostname, but for new users it might be less confusing to stick with the preset hostname. Here’s where it is:
Open up your Gnome-terminal (if you use Gnome) or if you use KDE, open up KDE’s terminal (it’s called Konsole). Look at the prompt. It’s made up of two things, your username and your hostname. For example my prompt is this:

beatrice@dellnotebook:~>

So I have “dellnotebook” for my hostname. Look at your console prompt and it will show you the hostname.

You can add your fixed IP address, subnet mask and hostname in Yast, like in this screenshot: http://www.swerdna.net.au/confignic/nic9.png

You can add your gateway in Yast, like in this screenshot: http://www.swerdna.net.au/confignic/nic8.png

You can add the IP addresses of your DNS servers in Yast, like in this screenshot: http://www.swerdna.net.au/confignic/nic7.png

Luck

thanks i will try it out and let you know.

most probably i have given hostname as loalhost in which case i have tried giving the hostname as localhost but i dint work

Just set any name you like for hostname, for example: googlehelper. Any name
will work. I would avoid your username or workgroup/domain name.

The reason “localhost” does not work is that “localhost” is the network
equivalent of “myself”.

In a terminal window, su to root and run the following commands:

ifconfig -a
cat /etc/resolv.conf
cat /etc/HOSTNAME
route

Post the results.

is it ipconfig or ifconfig

coz if its ipconfig then cmd not found

you i will post the result soon

anyways thanks for the help i will post the result soon

here is a screennshot of the command asked by “pv” . http://communityonwer.googlepages.com/susescreenshot.png

all details like my ip and default gateway are all correct

You have set your HOSTNAME as localhost.localdomain

This needs changing in Yast Network
call it anything really: eg: MeOnline@SUSE11

As I mentioned in an earlier post, localhost is really a bad name to choose
for your hostname. Choose something else. The actual name you use is not to
critical and it gives you a chance to be creative. Some give a descriptive
hostname as Swerdna, others choose a word from scifi (i.e warp6) but
localhost has special meaning and is associated with the loop back address.

Just how do you connect to the internet? Is there a router between your
machine and your ISP’s line (this might even be integrated with a modem)?
Did your ISP assign you the IP you are using? Have you been able to connect a
Windows machine on the same connection? If so you can look at
the “status ->Support tab->details” to see how that is configured. Without
knowing your method of connecting it is hard to advise, but I expect you need
to set a gateway.

yup i will change it to something else

and in windows i am able to use net

i dont have any modem the cable is connected directly to port at the back of cpu.

once i enter my ip dtails i need to go my seviceproviders url which is come thong like http: //202.XXX.XX.XX:8090 and either download a software or directly login with a username and pass. Once this is verified i should be able to access other site. (just dont care about this)

but i am not even able to access this site. i have been using net on window for the past 5 years without any problem . earlier i had fedora in that too i was able to access the net. i am facing problem in suse( 10.3) only

(ps" fedora had a windows style setup)

one more thing suse comes built in with microsoft’s “.NET”
i would like to find out if i have installed it or not and how do i work on C# in linux

Although possible, not likely. AFAIK only ATT U-Verse is an IP based data and video network. You may need to talk to your ISP to verify you’re physically connecting to your network properly.

Getting back to basics, you need to first verify you’ve picked up an IP address. Unfortuantely, you blacked out the critical information instead of simply changing the numbers so I can’t see if you’re configured properly. Verify you’re configured for DHCP and then that you have a proper IP address (public if not behind NAT, private if behind NAT).

The Hostname issue is a non-critical issue. Although it’s not recommended for the Hostname to be “localhost” that shouldn’t cause network issues unless another machine is trying to communicate with your machine by Hostname.

I recommend you take a look at my post in this forum to the thread “all I want is a static ip” by WHATCH originating on Dec 4, 2008 which describes in detail using YAST to configure your NIC. The only diff is that you should configure for DHCP instead of a static IP address. Completing all those steps will set your Hostname, FQDN, write to your Hosts file, configure IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS, etc.

As for dotNET, by default SuSE does not install the full Mono package, only core components (aka runtimes).

In a nutshell…
Mono is roughly equivalent to about 95% of Microsoft’s Framework 2.0 (most obviously SharePoint is not supported), but is <not> “Microsoft.” You can research the history how Microsoft granted public licensing to the original CLR and C# compiler but most of everything that follows after that is a grey area and legal dispute. There are a few IDEs you can try, MonoDevelop is probably the most well known. SuSE is one of the leading implementers of Mono, I think I read somewhere that Beagle is a Mono app (needs verification). Mono is cool.
