The “nickname” command is not implemented, and never will be. Remove that
request from /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan0.

Sorry for the previous post. You need to delete the line

nick $WIRELESS_NICK

in file /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifup-wireless. For completeness, delete
the same line in files /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifdown-wireless and
/etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifstatus-wireless.

I’ll report this as a bug.

First of all, the bug in the wireless script will be fixed for 11.2. The
openSUSE folks are not clear about what to do with 11.1 and SLED 11.

For you, I think it would be easier to use NetworkManager to control the
network. It takes care of a lot of details. Is there any reason for not doing so?

What is the output of the command ‘dmesg | grep rtl’?
