Hi,
I am trying to install a file and print server for backup and storage using an opensuse 11.3 live CD but the CD loaded the complete desktop. How do i pare this down to a server install? Do I need to reinstall? I have a mixed network of opensuse, Ubuntu, and Windows 7. Thanks in advance.

Don’t know for sure what you want to use, but some desktops don’t use all of that much resources, but you can add a 3 to the kernel load line and go to run level three and thus not loading any desktop, yet you could always start a desktop if you needed to. You can run yast2 at the terminal prompt to do many things and if your loaded the console tools, you can use mc (Like Midnight Command) file manager which is nice.
Thank You,

Alternatively you can edit /etc/inittab. Replace the line:
id:5:initdefault:
with the line:
id:3:initdefault:
OpenSuSe will then start at runlevel 3, Full multiuser with network but no xdm
(X display manager). If you should want the GUI just enter
init 5

or, if you don’t want all that X stuff even installed, then go back and
install from the DVD that fits your needs (32/64) and when you get to
this page:
https://picasaweb.google.com/caf4926/114_DVD_Install#slideshow/5581713871169429458
choose “Other” and then “minimum text install” (or something like that,
i’ve not seen it in a while…but, this might all be better covered
somewhere in doc.opensuse.org, give a look)
and then when you get to this page
https://picasaweb.google.com/caf4926/114_DVD_Install#slideshow/5581714689939673330
you can click on Software, and pick some server function patterns
then you can click the Details, and get individual packages you want,
like i always check mc…

I don’t know why, but the first line of all your replies gets mixed up
with the quoted OP’s, as in the example below.
I use NNTP and everybody else’s replies look normal whilst yours are
always ugly. I guess you have some habit that is slightly different to
normal

know what it is either but it sure is unkind to nntp users…it would be
kinda like if we did this all the time!!
