Serious boot issues.

Hi,

I can’t seem to get openSuse to install. It fails everytime during the bootloader phase - it tells me before installation that the bootloader should install fine.

The error is grub 22. It asks me if I wish to reconfigure the bootloader, so I say yes. I’ve tried every option that seems available for both grub and LILO. LILO simply errors telling me it can’t handle the device.

I think it’s a conflict with Mandriva. I have been through several Linux variants over the last few days trying to find one upon which I can install my wireless adapter( the infamous rt8185 ). The live-cd detects and installs the wireless adapter automatically, it also roams and finds the access points around me. So I had/have high hopes for openSuse. Yet, the live installer gave me all these bootloader issues. So I installed Mandriva( actually, Mandrake 10.1 :P, as I had it lying around and it was a quick fix so I could boot back in to Windows and google around for solutions ). Anyway, I ended up downloading the DVD and installing openSuse from there instead of the Live disc.

I get the same errors from the DVD. Only now, if I choose “Boot From Hard Disk” I get the mandrake boot loader. I’ve deleted all drake partitions and then tried reinstalling openSuse with the same results. I’ve also tried the repair option, which did fix a corrupt partition. Didn’t seem to help at all however.

I’m convinced it’s to do with old mandriva/drake junk still lingering on my system. But I have no idea how to get rid of it - short of reinstalling windows and overwriting it.

Not sure how to grab my disk info, so I screencapped windows disk manager.

You can see that here: http://azazeldev.org/disks.jpg

Disk0 = IDE.
Disk1 = IDE.
Disk2 = SATA.
Disk3 = SATA.

Disk1 was partitioned by the openSuse installer.

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can solve this?

Thanks.

A couple stupid things to look into (stupid as in, "Is it plugged in? - not meant as a disparagement).

Does the bios boot from disk 1 first?

Next, could you try making a small /boot partition on a different disk and boot from that (again, this may require a bios change)? Maybe the MBR of disk 1 got corrupted somehow.

Does booting from DVD and using the rescue system option get you logged on and able to see the disk1 SUSE partitions?

The bios boots from the DVD drive first.

If I use the rescue system it doesn’t get me logged on. It runs through a load of checks, then brings me back to the menu( asking me if I want to auto fix or manually fix etc ).

I will try the boot partition, not entirely sure how to do that but I’ll figure it out.

Thanks.

Ok, I created a boot partition. It gave me error 22, I went to config and asked it to use the boot partition. Again, error 22. All partitions produce error 22 apart from ext partition. Ext partition continues installation, it runs into the first reboot - mandrake 10.1 bootloader.

I really am at a loss. I’m reluctant to format every disk and then install windows, then openSuse. Because if that doesn’t work I will have spent a couple hours for nothing.

I’m going to do this. I’ll post back here if it works.

If you’re ready to throw in the towel and reformat everything, may as well try auto-fix first. Also, there was a recent post about error 22 - might be worth your time to look for it.

Seems strange to see you go from “don’t want to format” to “going to format” in 8 minutes.

Well, I didn’t want to format because it means reinstalling everything under Windows. I’d like to just drop Windows altogether, but I’m a DirectX programmer and I have code that needs to be maintained. I changed my mind cause I’d already spent two days trying and I’d finally had enough.

Anyway, I’m writing this from within Gnome :D. So, whatever was going on it’s solved now. I am so happy my wlan installed itself auto ;).

Thanks for the help. :slight_smile:
