Series of Issues During Installation

I am really having a time here trying to install 11.2 on my 2nd machine. And I been at it for nearly 48hrs.

I am using the net installer because I am currently fresh out of 700mb cd’s. So, that could be 1 thing. But, I was able to get everything to install perfectly on this machine here with that very same cd. So its not like the checksum is bad.

Either way, whats going on seems to be a variety of things. 1st of these issues is I’ll get to the part where you select the drives to be partitioned. I’ll select a preferred drive and set the partitions as I want them. But when I start installing. It’ll give me this blasted error about “unable to delete” one of the partitions I set. Im no major tech guy. But, why the heck is it obsessed with trying to delete something it has’nt even created yet?!

The 2nd issue is the one spiking my blood pressure levels. I can get past the 1st issue now at times. But when I do. This 2nd issue is what has me making this post. Everything will start downloading and installing just fine. But, each attempt made up to this point never gets past 13% completion! The reason seems to be that theres a packages that keeps failing. Here is the error I keep getting:

Installation of package ./suse/noarch/kdegames4-carddecks-default-4.3.2-4.2.noarch.rpm failed

This is funny as I’ve tried this with full install(not deselecting anything) and with the games deselected. But this error STILL pops up! If I choose to see the details on that error. I get this:

Subprocess failed. Error: cant create transaction lock on /mnt/var/lib/rpm/_db.OOO(read-only file system)

Note that at this point, Im kinda ready to chuck this thing out the window. The 3rd & last issue is that if none of the previous 2 have taken place. The installation will make it past the 13% point but just “hang” there during the installation at about 32%…right now my head is just throbbing over here-_-

The system’s specs:
AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
2gb DDR2 Ram
Asus MB(M2V-MX)

Any ideas for a safe workaround? I REALLY dont want alot of stuff on there anyways other than just the primary stuff & the DE.

the command in a seperate teminal (try alt ctrl f2)
enter rpm --rebuilddb
when it is finished resume your installation

as far as your partitioning did you edit the proposed formating so for example /dev/sdx1 is no longer mounted as root and not formated
and /dev/sdx2 is no longer mounted as /home and not formated etc
then yoou can proceed with your custom formating.

Also, please, omit your editorializing. It will make your question a lot easier to comprehend.

Agreed. It’s not likely the CD is defective.

According to this: Installer bug into OpenSuSE 11.2 - ReadList.com … it sounds as if the partition has become mounted somehow.

Give a few more details about your hard drives: are you using a mix of SATA and PATA? Are you using LVM?

Try a different repository. I’ve had problems with the defaults selected by the install CD, but when I manually selected the repository, it worked.

Your error about “read-only file system,” however, makes me wonder as well.

One other thing: it’ll cost you another download, but try the Live CD and see if it runs. You could then install from the Live CD. Don’t ask me why, but I’ve had this work (and I’ve also had the opposite work – the Live CD wouldn’t install, but the Net install did!!!).

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the replies!

Dale 1846:
Im going to try you’re method 1st. As for the partitioning portion. I do sit there and edit the “proposed partitions”.

I guess I was correcting it too much while you guys were reading it?^^;

I will try your method next. The drives are no mix of pata & sata. They are all pata. But, only 1 of them is connected directly to the board’s IDE1. Whereas the other 4 are connected through a controller card. And im not using LVM. Because Im not 100% sure about what it really is. So, I avoid it.

I already nabbed the KDE Live Disk. And Im about to head out to nab a pack of cd’s. So if the net installer flops again. I’ll just burn the Live one.

Thanks guys. I’ll keep you updated of any changes.

Sorry dale 14486…

I entered that command in the separate terminal as you instructed. But, Its still giving me an error:

Error: cant create transaction lock on /mnt/var/lib/rpm/_db.OOO(No such file or directory)

…oh I almost forgot. I could’nt tell at 1st. But, those “OOO’s” in that error were actually “0’s”(zeroes*). Sorry.-_-

ALRIGHT!

Thank you smpoole7!

I guess this is something I should’ve figured would work for myself. But I was hard determined to believe that net-installer was fine. Since it was used to install the system right here.

My problem machine is now up and all left to do now is run some updates. Remove ALOT of apps I dont want. And I’ll be solid;)

@phyerboss,

Glad to hear it. When you get time, maybe we can put our heads together and figure out why the LiveCD would work when the Net install wouldn’t.

(And like I said, I’ve had the opposite case, too: the LiveCD crashed and burned, but the Net install worked like a hose!)

(Go figure.)
