Serial communications

G’day all: Yes, I’m a real newbie to Linux. I have installed a copy of Suse 10.0 on an old desktop and that’s running just fine. I have fought my way through installing an Astrotek CP4SL 4-port serial card which seems to be ready for final (?) configuration. I simply want a bunch of serial RS-232 comm lines between various devices and this computer. The next step was to look for a simple terminal emulator like TeraTerm for Windows. Searched these forums and saw that a subscriber named Ted asked a similar question in 2008. Didn’t really get answered very satisfactorily. Minicom was suggested. I have just installed it. Like Ted, I was a bit dismayed by its set-up complexity. Sometimes we just want to get the job done with a minimum of fuss. Now Linux (Unix) historically prides itself on comms between computers and networks. Surely there must be a simpler terminal emulator for straightforward serial (RS-232) comms that will run on Suse 10? Yes, I know Suse 12.2 is released and I intend to install it next month. I am using the KDE GUI because that installed kcmshell that worked, so I could set up my Sambo network - unlike the Gnome desktop in the distro. Someone else replied to Ted re minicom that it was the journey that counted, not the destination. That’s not very helpful - sometimes the journey is too long anyway. And if Ted happens to read this, I would be most interested to hear what he finally used for his serial comms.? Suggestions gratefully received.

Notice that this is an openSUSE forum, not a SUSE forum. SUSE has a different forum.

Assuming you mean openSUSE 10.0, as it is out of maintenance I have no idea what software you
might find available for it. I hope you have minicom, and that is the best one you can find,
and very easy to use. You might get kermit working, but you will not find it easier.

Notice that there is no such thing as Suse 12.2. There is, however, openSUSE 12.2 which has
just been released. The name is important.

Hi
Minicom is what you want, it’s not that bad. I’ve used it to connect to
my sparc systems…

Just configure the com ports, set emulation to vt100 and you should be
good to go.

What specific issues are you having?

openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64) Kernel 3.4.6-2.10-desktop

Depending on the issues you have you made need to give your user more
rights to do serial communication (for example by adding the dialout
group to the user).
If you already have the serial connection working as such forget this
(to me your description is not fully clear what works and what not).
Other than that I always see minicom as a absolutely easy program, so
what kind of configuration does give you headache in detail?
