Hi
Just installed openSUSE 11.0 on my PC. It seem to be working fine but on checking the messages shown at boot time, I found out that the message “Serial 8250: too much work for irq18” is shown repeatedly many times.
This was not the case when openSUSE 10.3 was running on my PC.
The only change I have made to the system is add a new SATA 320 GB HDD.
Please help…
Regards,
Yogesh M
I suppose this is a hardware-related post.
Apparently irq 18 concerns the SATA controller.
Go through your motherboard manual and see if you need to change any jumper settings to support larger HDDs.
I don’t think this is a major problem, unless you have future problems with detection of removable/USB devices etc.
You may have some sort of IRQ conflict. If you do not need the serial port on your mobo, disable it at the BIOS setup.
First of all thanks for replying, you guys are really quick:)
Here is some more information about my PC:
The motherboard is Intel D865GBF. It supports SATA drives (1st generation) though there is no word in the manual regarding maximum supported size of the disk. I’ve two disks; first is the older one (Seagate IDE ATA 80 GB, sda in openSUSE) and the other is the new WD SATA 320 GB drive (Model WD3200AAJS supporting 2nd gen. SATA, sdb in openSUSE). The drive can automatically adjust to SATA 1st gen. spec. and is working fine without any problem, though a jumper setting exist to explicitly restrict the drive to SATA 1st gen.
Lastly, I’m dual booting with Windows XP. Both OSs are installed on the new drive which, obviously, is the one set-up as boot drive in the bios.
Will post if I find anything useful in the bios settings when I get home later today.
Regards,
Yogesh M
EDIT: I’ve some issues with USB drives (Windows/Linux), will give details after a bit more testing at home.

Try on boot to add
irqpoll (care with azerty keyboard)
in the line for the parameters of boot
I’ve now disabled Serial and Parallel ports in bios, but to no help.
I want to post the contents of my boot log for you but I am unable to attach it, can soneone help in this also?

Hi
If your ISP provides you a webpage you can post the boot.log file there
as txt, you just need to upload it via ftp;
e.g here is one I posted for my xorg.conf
http://www.muppetwifi.homeunix.net/novell/xorg_conf_sled.txt

Use lsmod to check if you have the serial module loaded. If so and you are not using it, stop it from loading. Not sure why you have it at all, it isn’t loaded on mine.
Here is the link to boot-log
Hi,
I’m possibly having a problem which might be related to the earlier one in this thread.
I’ve noticed that sometimes when I run applications they get run but remain non-responsive. When I checked it through System Monitor (KDE4) and top I found that that process was in “disk sleep” state.
One such example:
linux-sm3q:/proc/3450 # cat status

I would say to send this material to reiserfs-devel@vger.kernel.org as it is a
Reiserfs bug, but your tainted kernel will make them ignore your bug report. In
a quick scan, I didn’t see which module is the one that taints your system. If
it is not something critical, try blacklisting that module and see if the bug
persists. These kinds of errors are the reason I switched from Reiserfs to ext3,
as ext3 get a lot more testing.

Kernel is tainted because of nvidia drivers.:o
I cannot say when the problem occurs, but if you really think I should disable nvidia drivers I can give it a try.
I’m using Reiserfs for the past 4-5 years without a single problem. I tried to switch to ext3 (with 10.3) but then I had to manually repair the partition 2-3 times in a months time. Also it seemed a bit slow, so I reverted to Reiserfs. Do you think I should give ext3 another try? Can the problem be related to overload of irq18?
Last one; If you think I should switch to ext3, is there any conversion utility which could save me from reinstallation? Even /home partitions is a Reiserfs one.
Regards,
Solved the irq18 problem by removing unused modem (it has also solved one more completely unrelated problem which I was having for many years when I upgraded bios ).
I’ve still not filed a bug report yet; just waiting for one more instance.
Thanks,
