The renaming of General to General Chit Chat is a quick to the point title. Between General Chit Chat & Soapbox that one posters prayer is just one more step to being answered.
Great thinking IMHO Thanks!

interesting…it is a step in the right direction…
but, i just checked and see nntp has been forgotten again…
i say that because opensuse.org.community.general has not been changed
to opensuse.org.community.general-chit-chat
and (more importantly) there is no nntp posting (i can find) which
states that the name has been changed in the web forum to
general-chit-chat nor that the purpose of the group is “General
Chit-Chat A friendly place to converse about your adventures with
openSUSE, your weekend, your boss, your new car, and generally stuff
that doesn’t fit somewhere else (and we must ask: PLEASE do not post
help questions here)”
unfortunately, changing the name of the web forum in the web forum
only will have absolutely NO impact on the next old time nntp user who
tries to re-connect…because when s/he does turn to the familiar
‘newsgroup’ format (without thinking about dialing in a www and reading
“Do not post questions here”)-- s/he will very likely (after searching
for, and not finding as expected a FAQ in the group to tell her/him
where to post what) probably pick .gen as the place to start with “I
don’t know where to put this but i have a problem…how do i blah blah?”
don’t worry, i’m NOT just b|tch|ng, i’m also thinking of a
solution…just haven’t figured out how to implement it, yet.

Very true & good remark Sagemta! It makes it just that little bit clearer where to post certain things! Good move!
(Not that I ever ran into any mixups with this -wink, wink- )
DenverD, your solution : use the superior Web interface!! -running away and ducking-

No it hasn’t. Renaming a forum on the web side doesn’t automatically make the necessary changes on the NNTP side.

you better run FAST!!

NNTP doesn’t allow for this. You can create groups and remove groups and
set them to “read-only”. You need to refresh your group list and
subscribe to the new groups.
Jim
<shrug>
I just subscribed to the new NNTP groups and moved on.
Love the name changes and fortunately since the change has
happened early on, not too much of a loss…frankly some of
the threads I’d rather see buried anyway.
As has been mentioned you do have to refresh and check for
new groups.
> You need to refresh your group list and subscribe to the new groups.
good point…
ooops, i just did that and remain subscribed to opensuse.org.community.general
as there is not yet an nntp pathway to opensuse.org.community.general-chit-chat
paving roadways while traffic continues to flow has always been somewhat troublesome…
CAUTION, ROAD WORK AHEAD
i’m sure this information superhighway will soon be smooth as glass…and more clearly signed than ever!!

hmmmmm…i hit the refresh button several times and still can’t find a
opensuse.org.community.general-chit-chat forum and wonder how you subscribed to
it…AHHHHHH, perhaps i have discovered a bug in thunderbird–THAT would be a
first, huh?

oh WOW, finally i got down in my list more and read the announcements forum and
learn there is a new kid on the block:
opensuse.org.no-support.*
which is a GOOD thing!!

I wondered how long it would take you to find it.

general-chit-chat is there (look under “no-support”. I subscribed to it
yesterday. But what you you mean by “there is not yet an nntp pathway
to”? That’s not parlance I’m familiar with at all - both groups exist at
the moment, “community.general”.

I don’t see those either.

Is there a closure message there? If there is, then you probably won’t
be able to post there.

It is actually these now:
opensuse.org.help.howto
opensuse.org.help.howto.submissions

That’d do it.

yep…i’d almost bet that as you considered the possible naming convention to
have o.o.c* be re-listed WAY down there at the nntp hierarchical bottom (vice
top) you chuckled to yourself thinking some oldPharts might overlook that branch
entirely…
you done good! (in hiding via re-naming!!)
and, as said earlier: this is (imHo) a giant step in the right direction…

I must admit I don’t understand NNTP. So have I read this right that those of you into this NNTP can be in General Chit Chat from your NNTP as such?
By that i mean has it been fixed in such a way that you’d know it’s General C.C. & not something else from your NNTP?

yes, it is fixed now…
btw, it is REAL easy to give the nntp side a whirl, if you use thunderbird
already you are almost all set…
each posting comes looking like an email, and you respond like it is an email…
and, lets say you have an hour (or more) bus, train, plane or whatever ride to
work/school/whatever…you can download ALL the unread postings in all your
favorite opensuse.org forums before taking off and read and respond while not
net connected…
then, the next time you can jump on the net all your postings will be gobbled up
and placed in BOTH the web and nntp forum…
try that with the standard web interface…

Hmm, all I need is Tb eh? I’ll have to install it & give it a try.

Thunderbird is nice in that it has the offline reading/responding capabilities.
FWIW I believe Knode and Pan come with openSUSE and they are both good NNTP clients.

Yes.
There’s a mapping from the web forum to an NNTP newsgroup.
