Send mail with thunderbird fais

after a an update thunderbird fail to send email saying a password is required.
As far as I can tell, everything is in order.
Looking on the net this seems to be a common problem, with no clear solution. Can anyone offer a realistic solution that dosn’t involve deleting my 4 accounts and history an starting all over again?

Are you saying all 4 accounts are requesting a password, and are all 4 accounts with the same email host?

All 4 accounts fail and use virgin media ntlworld.com. I am sure this is thunderbirds fault.

I’v just cleared thunderbird cache and tried again.
the reply received says “Sending of the message failed.
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Authentication Required (VM401). Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again.”
The emails addresses are correct as are the passwords.

This is definitely not Thunderbird’s fault but a setting one. Sometimes also the Email provider changes requirements or has intermediate server problems.

o.k. I’ve read the URL provided and this makes sense. BUT, my setting previously did not require a password, i.e no authentication required, so something has changed . I have now to find what password id required for smtp authentication. and if I require one for each email account.
Thank you for your assistance.
