I am using 11.3 and would like to keep it. I hate plasma and worry about keeping some of my favourite programs.* Also, I’m very fond of my current desktop which I’ve tweaked for years. However, I need to get a new computer. If I install 11.3 on a new machine, will the existing updates still be available or are they gone forever? If they are gone is there an alternative?
For example: kuickshow is the best image viewer I know of but I lost it when I upgraded to 11.3.
Hi
They are still there in the ‘discontinued’ repository but only for the
oss/non-oss and updates. Any Open Build Service ones will slowly
disappear off the mirrors. There will only be a limited amount of
mirrors with the discontinued releases as well; http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mirrors#EOL_mirrors

it is really hard to say…i mean end of life for openSUSE 11.3 was
yesterday…and, i expect eventually the repos will be taken
down…but, then again there are repos of 9.x and 10.x still up in
places not too hard to find (just ask)
but, if you want to make sure all the packages are available you really
do need to make a local copy…
and, you can count on updates to stop being produced…but, then again
there is a program called Evergreen <http://tinyurl.com/4aflkpy> which
is ‘extending’ the life of 11.1 and 11.2–who knows what they have
planned for updates for 11.3
> If they are gone is there an alternative?
run un-patched and pray
manually patch (don’t ask me how)
hope for Evergreen to pick up 11.3 (between me and you, i kinda doubt
they are really gonna try to support every version since 11.1!!)
switch distros to something that support the software you like,
longer (like maybe SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop)
move to a Mac, they hardly ever change and i don’t think they have
the plasma you hate.

You may try to copy over your old system to the new.

If you want to avoid Plasma, there are KDE3 repos still available and openSUSE has always had a policy of enabling KDE3 to run alongside KDE4 - I have KDE3 programs running alongside KDE4; so I assume it is possible to run a KDE3 desktop and also use those KDE4 programs you are happy with. I did that during the switchover from KDE3 to KDE4 and did not have any problems.
AFAIK there are other forum users who still do this.
