I have two monitors on my desktop. I just did a fresh install of tumbleweed and only one of them is working. My mouse cursor moves off the working monitor like the second one is there. Plasma display setting shows the second monitor and indicated that it is enabled but the monitor is blank and says it’s receiving no HDMI input. Any ideas?
It seems weird that plasma claims to see the monitor, but the monitor doesn’t see any input. Perhaps check the cables are still well inserted and/or try another cable, or a different kind of cable. Maybe try a hot unplug/replug.
What does the xrandr command report? Typically it should report all GPU ports and what is connected to them.
Otherwise, more folk might have suggestions if you describe the GPUs, GPU-drivers, monitor configuration, and other relevant info, such as whether this is a laptop…
Please copy and paste using PRE tags (</> icon above input window) input/output from running inxi -GSaz --vs in Konsole or Xterm.
Sometimes a problem like this can be avoided by switching your Plasma session type at the login screen from X11 to Wayland or vice versa; or, by disabling KScreen 2 in Plasma’s systemsettings’ autostart section.
Both hardware standards allow for hot plugging, so if your GPU, cables, VDU and drivers are compliant you should have no issues.
I don’t buy super expensive components and can afford to replacements, I’ve no hesitation in hot plugging my VDUs. If you have a piece of equipment that you can’t afford to replace, I can see you might want to be more conservative.
Just because the spec supports hotplug doesn’t ensure there’s no risk of HDMI port failure. I’ve never lost an HDMI port on a computer’s GPU output, or a display’s HDMI input, but I have lost HDMI ports on 4 other devices over the years, including FTA satellite receiver, and very expensive Pioneer A/V receiver with 7 HDMI ports, shortly after its warranty expired.
