what happened just before it “just disappeared”?
-performed an online update?
-forced shutdown?
-desktop crashed?
-installed a fantastic new game?
-dog unplugged the machine, no battery backup
-system freeze?
-manually edited a configurations file as root
-laptop dropped?
-Red Bull spilled on keyboard?
-battery went completely out of power
-decided to install a better video driver?
-system came out of hibernate?
-flash froze?
-moved some files from on place to another as root
-let my girl/boyfriend use the machine to . . .
-desktop went all screwy?
-turned on desktop effects?
-switched from gnome to kde?
-had milk and cookies?
-logged in to KDE or Gnome as root
-was in Win7 but then booted to Linux and bang?
-just booted first time since the last session in which any of the
above happened
give us a little hint, please…
oh, and tell us please:
-what desktop you are using, and its version
-have you been using the Factory or Tumbleweed repos

Caveat
openSUSE®, the “German Automobiles” of operating systems
Gnome 2 desktop.
Performed an update (it updated flash an something else)
After that the computer is freezing constantly and it went berserk a couple of times, just opening every window that was meant to open in the control center, one after the other - without me ever entering the control center. and the filter line from the menu doesn’t work.

A new user to test things is a good idea as Carlos suggests.
But show us your repo list:

Did you test a new user login?
No, the problem magically went away? Can’t believe it actually.
It might be that all you needed was a reboot (If you had done some considerable updates)
