Can anyone tell me what this is and why it is accessing the HD so very frequently?

An Internet search for “novtswitch” returns results that suggest you have a misbehaving application that’s likely related to creating images on your screen which is your default display (x:0). I didn’t see anything that might suggest why the “sea” in your activity shows up.
It might be something related to how graphics are rendered on your system, it might be an actual application you’re running.
Maybe a place to start is when the event starts happening… During bootup? Or only after you launch a specific application?
Hope you have enough to start narrowing down what is happening…
