I recently can’t login to my account after the screen saver locks it.
The message I get is: “Permissions on the password database may be too restrictive”
I can open a second session and the login works fine.
All this happened after a few crashes that I had.
Can anybody help where to look at. I saw a few post with related topics, but they do not apply here. i did not play around with permissions in /etc and /etc/passwrd and /etc/shadow are Ok
Thank you
My system:
lenovo T410 with opensuse 12.1 64 bit , KDE
Normally, KDE issues are fixed by upgrading the desktop version. Make sure you are up to date. You could update to KDE 4.8, which may not have the issue as the KDE 4.8 repositories work great. You could create a new user and see if they have the problem. And of course, you could stop using a screen saver password which would fix your present setup.

Did you google it? I see several hits. One about the “/etc/sysconfig/permissions” file sounds
interesting. Another about nsswitch.conf “shadow: compat” setting, in this same forum years ago.
I see a previous poster saying he tried several things without success, but hiding what were
those things he tried or that do not apply.

Yes, I disabled the screen saver password as a workaround. I indeed suspect it is more related to KDE (4.7) than anything else. I had attempted an upgrade to 4.8 but I fall in a situation where KDE doesn’t start at all. It’s true that I had probably messed up my repositories but now think this is fixed. Just in case there would have been a chance those two issues were related, I wanted to rule out this one before trying the upgrade again. Any other suggestion before I try the upgrade again and most probably open then another thread with that issue (I suppose it’s best not to hijack a thread with another topic.)?
After you upgrade to KDE 4.8 you must go back, at the openSUSE log in screen, and select the KDE Plasma Desktop as there is NO longer a default KDE desktop selected and if this is not done, the openSUSE log in will fail to work.
Yes the upgrade to KDE 4.8 creates this silly issue where the default desktop is lost and must be set and the openSUSE log in does not handle having no default session. And as always, when a desktop has a problem, the most common fix is a newer desktop version or upgrade, as you found out.
I was happy to help and thanks for letting us know of your success.
