i installed suse on dell xps 410 with 2007fpw monitor and noticed that the screen refresh rate is 77 and cannot be changed. my concern is that the monitor calls for a refresh rate of about 60 and i would like to know if i am going to ruin my monitor? graphics card is nvidia geforce 7950 gx2
Sometimes the reported refresh rate in KDE or Gnome is not accurate. YaST/Graphics Card will show you what it actually is when you use “Test”. You can set the vertical and horizontal ranges under the Monitor button. But with the nvidia proprietary driver, under the Card button there will be a list of nvidia options the driver supports - many more btw than you’ll see in the nvidia-settings application. Look for “VertRefresh” and click on it; enter your refresh rate (my LCD monitor while being “60 Hz” is more precisely 59.887; that’s what I used) and save. You can also specify the horiz rate explicitly, if you know it (mine is 55.935). Look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and you’ll find an explicit option added in the Device section. Reboot. That will do it.
i am newbie, so bear with me. when i looked at settings for the graphics card & moitor, no nvidia there, only VESA even tho i have nvidia installed on windows. when i used “test” it showed something like 80,77 even tho i set different ranges under the vesa settings. (30,60) H, (50.60) V
