I run openSUSE 11.2 on my notebook using VirtualBox 3.0.6_OSE r52128. Recently, I installed the guest additions on my Windows XP guest system (VBoxGuestAdditions_3.0.6.iso).
Before this installation I was able to use a screen resolution of 1024x768 in the guest system. Having installed the guest additions the best result I get is 800x600.
The resolution I’d like to get is 1280x800 which is the default setting of the host system. The graphic device used in my system is an Intel 965 GME/GLE.

Have you allocated sufficient video memory in the virtual machine setup?

That should be more than enough. In my case, 8MB selected for “display”
in the “details” tab for the VM is sufficient for 1360x699 32bit (I only
allocate 512MB for the VM memory).
I have had problems resizing the display. IIRC, I used “Host+G” to set
auto-resize the display, then “Host+F” to select full screen and
“Host+F” again to exit that mode to go from 800x600 to 1360x699 - it had
800x600 as the only size before.
Note: 1360x699 is the VM screen on a 1360x768 display (LCD TV used as a
monitor).

When upgrading VB, I initially get 800x600 for XP and I find that
installing the guest additions twice with a VM reboot between and
after sometimes goes back to the larger display immediately (why it
doesn’t with one install and reboot, I have no idea - though the
installation doesn’t seem to “take” the first time). I also have autorun
turned off, so I have to run the installer manually from the “CD”.
If the display stays at 800x600, I find that turning off “auto resize”
(Host+G), then entering and leaving full screen (HOST+F twice) followed
by re-enabling auto resize (HOST+G) does the trick. This is from before
version 3.0.x of VBox and almost automatic for me now.
My system runs XP in 1360x703 24bit with 8MB video RAM in the VM on a
1360x768 TV/Monitor.

I was having resolution problems and found some advice on a gaming forum:
boot the VM to SAFE MODE and install the guest additions as the
administrator. I didn’t see it, but the folks on the forum were
complaining that XP/VISTA would play security cop and replace some updated
DLL’s with the originals otherwise. They also said to deny the system
permission to change the DLL’s back if it asks you on subsequent boots.
