screen resolution issues

I just installed opensuse 11.1 for the first time on my Acer 6930 laptop. The best screen resolution I can achieve is the completely useless 800x600. None of the other distros of linux I have installed on this computer have had this problem. Does anyone know of a fix? Thanks!

Hi 2handband

Information concerning your hardware and X config would be useful. Then it may be possible to guide you. Open a console and su to root. Then run these commands

hwinfo --gfxcard
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Post the details here.

The graphics card:

Thanks for info. So, you have an intel integrated graphics chipset. There have been issues reported with monitor mode detection and xorg intel drivers. The modelines seem to be ignored unless this detection is disabled. Try adding

Option “NoDDC”

to your xorg.conf device section. You will need to edit this as root, preferably from a console (terminal window). For example:

su (to become root)
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.working (backup original file)
pico /etc/X11/xorg.conf (edit with pico editor)
