Screen got 'invalid resolution'

Hello everybody,

i’m a OpenSuse user and fan from time now, and i’m having a very strange behavior while trying to install leap 42.1.

steps to reproduce:

  1. I’m using install-usb, created with Unetbootin, xboot or yumi (tried all those).
  • I got no grub spash screen and jump straight to install process.
  1. when green bars should be displayed giving install wizard load process, i start getting “Invalid resolution” from my monitor (not from the computer, but from the monitor itself)
  • i see kernel messages before invalid resolution message
  1. i can’t install OpenSuse using GUI as install wizard is not displayed (nothing at all, just the monitor message).

I’ve tried to install other linux distro using GUIs, but always with same problem. (in ubuntu I force vga=975, 895 and other video modes but none has worked)

installing from cli is not a problem, however i can’t figure it out why this is happening.

hope you can help me.

note. installing from cli is not a problem, but i would like to know why this is happening (i haven’t tried it yet).

my hw:

core i5 3570
16gb ram
1.25 tb (3 drives)
nvidia gtx 560,
samsung smart tv 40" 4k (Un40Ju6100Fxzx)
mb gigabyte z77.

Thanks in advance.

DO NOT use Unetbootin or any other “boot helper” it is not needed

a simple binary copy of the iso to the device (not a partition on the device) will do just fine

I use cp xxxx.iso /dev/sdX
where X is the USB device

May be a video problem but until you do a proper install set up no way to be sure. I

https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Live_USB_stick

Right now i use those tools as i’m on windows :’(. if i were in any linux flavor I preffer using dd.

Imagewriter have some time it’s not updated and last time i used it failed with an unknown error.

besides, i wrote the image into a dvd and tried booting from there, and still got the error.

i have no kerner messages or anything.

The openSUSE documentation (e.g. SDB:Create a Live USB stick using Windows - openSUSE Wiki ) recommends the use of ImageUSB from Tools for OSForensics - ImageUSB - Write an image to multiple USB Flash Drives for your situation and explicitly warns against the use of other software.

Note the instructions for MS Windows users in the link supplied by gogalthorp seem to be obsolete.

When you download the iso image you should also get the associated checksum file (.sha256) and use it to ensure that you have a good iso download. Failing that, if your created USB drive (or DVD/CD) is bootable there should be a check install media option.

It is ignored by current KMS drivers. Try passing additionally “nomodeset” or alternatively use video=1024x768 (or whatever is suitable).

Thanks. I’ve used thus same usb to install other machine (not in my reach as of now) and tested with md5. No errors in md5 nor other installs

, ill try with nomodeset and video=1025x768.

none of the above fixed the issue. however, changing monitor fixed the issue (4k displays support is not good i guess).
Thank you so much for your feedback.

What res does that 4K monitor support?. Do you see the machines boot screen? If your video card supports 4K openSUSE should once properly set up. Initially on boot the machine will choose a lower res by default. Perhaps the monitor does not support lower res???

Why not download & burn a good utility disk, such as Hiren’s Boot CD? You can then have a Linux boot from either a CD or a USB stick, comes in handy for just such occasions.
