First off, I apologize. This is for a Fedora OS computer (I do have openSUSE on another comp.) but the fedora forums never give me a response (including this time) and these openSUSE forums are always very knowledgeable and helpful. So that said…
I keep starting up the computer and I’m not able to get far (although it’s not always at the same time) before my screen will go black, except it shows the mouse/cursor - but it’s frozen, and then the caps-lock light starts blinking and I can’t do anything or get it to recover. It ONLY occurs after I log in to wireless network.
How do I stop this and diagnose this?
I’ve tried, in the boot-startup to choose an older kernel version, but the same thing occurs! And this was working for months and now is not.

Why do you think this has started happening. I take it this is not a new install. Has there been a kernel update (Is that why you tried some of the older kernels?)

That’s the weird thing: NO kernel updates or anything! In fact the only “unusual” thing is that I haven’t used the computer in 10 days. That’s it.
I have no idea what could have caused this to start ocurring and I don’t know how to diagnose it.

At the loading of the grub, you have to be quick, but you need to bring up the menu. IIRC you then need to press the letter ‘a’ to edit the arguments - at the end of the line type this acpi=off
Then hit enter.
If that doesn’t work try: noapic
And if that doesn’t work try them both

I did it with acpi=off and this time it still froze but with the screen showing instead of it being blank. (And caps-lock still blinked)

Do you have ssh enabled into the Fedora unit?

I believe I do, but not sure, but how could I even use it if I can’t get it on to the network?

Forget ssh for now.
Use ‘a’ to edit the boot and this time press backspace to erase everything and just type: 3
Login at the CLI with your username and pass.
Now type: su (hit enter)
enter admin pass
type: yum update
see if it lists any
I’m wondering if you have a graphics driver and it’s been borked by partial updates. I’ve had this with fedora in the past and I resorted to always installing video drivers manually.

OK, I tried that but had a few problems:
Doesn’t “yum update” just try to update? Not list the recent ones?
It tried to connect but obviously could not get online
Then it said it was setting up update and printed about 200+ lines that scrolled by so quickly I couldn’t read what things it was printing.
How am I supposed to use that command in a non-scrolling window to get info on updates? Sorry, i must be misunderstanding you.

That’s fine. But you didn’t say if you had any particular video driver. Have you blacklisted the Nouveau driver? Maybe you look at re-enabling it.
Did you try level 3 to init5 then startx
And during the level 3 boot do you see errors in the verbose output?

This is my display info:
Vendor: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
Model: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GME GEM 20090114 x86/MMX/SSE2
Driver: 1.4 Mesa 7.6-devel
And i did do level 3 (at grub, type “a” and then only put 3, deleting everything else). I did see some “Problem…” stuff at the beginning but it goes by so fast that it’s useless.

Also, here’s the output of “yum check-updates” although since I typed “yum update” lasst night during level 3, didn’t that set everything to update?

Looks like an update is a good idea. What version of Fedora is it?

Fedora 11. I didn’t want to do an update until I checked back in with you but if you think it might help, should I just plug it in wired and do “yum update”? Will that update everything?

Yes. Wired. Then update.
There is kernel updates and Xorg there so maybe it will help.
What about the video card - what do you have?
