I am running openSUSE 13.1 on a HP ProBook 650 G1. Since the most recent kernel update (kernel-desktop-3.12.53-40.1.x86_64.rpm, which I installed on 2016-03-13), the brightness on my screen will not change. It is always at full power. The controls and Fn-keys for changing the brightness still pretend to work, the screen overlay still shows an updated bar and percentage - its just that the brightness does not change. As a result, my battery does not last very long now.
This was all working before the latest update. (Other updates were applied at the same time, but kernel seems like the likely suspect.)
Any ideas on what I can do to restore this functionality?

Hi
Perhaps one of the hp modules is not loading (hp_wmi)?
lsmod |grep hp
I had issues with an earlier kernel and on my HP ProBook 455 G1 had to
add the following kernel option (YaST-> Bootloader) to get the
backlight working;
acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\"
If the osi option above works, then it’s a regression which would need
a bug report.

Post back the bug number if you would, then other users can follow or
add themselves

It seems like I had a similar or the same issue on Leap 42.1. I followed this guide: http://itsfoss.com/fix-brightness-ubuntu-1310/ which says it’s written for Ubuntu, but worked for me. It may also work for you.
I wanted to reply that I had this also with Leap 42.1 on an HP Envy Touchsmart. All other function keys still work.
You know, I cannot imagine fully how amazing it is that Linux exists so well. In the corporatist (Mussolini’s definition of fascist) world, all logic dictates that MS and MAC should rule. How can I help? I know only basic, a little julia, and even less python…
