Screen becomes a mess after OS update reboot.

I installed openSUSE 12.2 on my pc and everything was fine. I did an online os update. A reboot was required after the update.

Now the login screen is full of random square blocks. I moved a small block which seemed to be my mouse and tried to input my login information. I found I could still log in, however still the whole screen is a mess. I could also click the left-bottom corner (KDE start menu I suppose) where something seemed to have popped up.

How can I fix this problem please?

Thanks.

What’s the video card used, and, did you install a driver for it?

I haven’t checked yet but the workstation is Dell precision T5500. It was a fresh install of openSuse 12.2 and an automatic online update. I hadn’t installed anything by myself yet.

Just booted to windows and looked up. The video card is NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295

Does booting Failsafe work? In GRUB2’s bootmenu go Advanced Options

No, it couldn’t boot either. I did saw display driver [fail] along with some other fails too (flash too fast to catch all).

I tried to edit xorg.conf.d and force to use “vesa” driver, however it couldn’t even get to login screen.

I had problems installing that card too although in openSUSE 12.1 (no
problem with 12.2) strangely. Do you have two monitors connected to the
Display Ports? I found that disconnecting one made things a lot easier
until I installed the display drivers. Also, it would be helpful to know
whether you can you reach the virtual consoles.

Any suggestion if this is a card driver issue? I’ve spent 5 hours trying to just fix this…

How do I prevent update to install new driver for the display card, as the initial installation of SUSE was ok. I don’t need the newest driver in fact.

Also, it’s better if you know how to install card driver for SUSE. Mine is Nvidia NVS 295

The surest way to install the driver for the Nvidia NVS 295 is using
Nvidia’s latest *.run file (which includes the drivers) downloadable
from the website and to be run outside X Window in a virtual console.
So, can you reach a virtual console?

Managed to install the driver. Thanks for the input.
