Screen and audio blanking on its own

I’ve been waiting to see if there was a resolution for my problem, but unfortunately, there hasn’t been. So, here I am.
My desktop is a Gateway DX4885-UR2D and is using an Intel HD 4600 graphics onboard GPU.

On Monday, 21 December, I was doing my updates through zypper,

zypper ref;zypper up

There wasn’t any out of the ordinary updates, with maybe the exception of xf86-video-intel, which I didn’t think anything about. Until later (at around 6PM, almost 8 hours later)!
I was watching videos using vlc and my monitor and HDMI TV both blanked and the sound stopped. Thinking that there had been a power outage (but that was a false assumption
I would realize later as everything else that ran off electricity was still working). I powered down my desktop through its power button, and restarted.
I was still under the assumption that it was a power outage at this point, until it did it again. This time, I noticed that everything else was still powered.
My thoughts went to thinking that it might be a software issue, and rebooted into a runlevel 3 through grub2.
I reverted the aforementioned xf86-video-intel to the previous version and rebooted back into runlevel 5.
It had been for naught, because it continued to blank out without sound. Rebooted back into runlevel 3 and tried to logically figure out the problem.
At the same time, I was working on another computer, so I had stopped doing anything on the desktop (wasn’t typing or using the mouse).
It blanked out again. A tap on the keyboard brought the screen back. It then clicked on me.
I started a timer on my cell, and found out that it blanked out after 10 minutes. I tried that a few times just to verify. I rebooted back into runlevel 5, and started up vlc.
It blanked out after 10 minutes. All I had to do was move the mouse and the screen and sound came back. The movie hadn’t stopped or anything.
I also noticed that it would revise the amount of time to blank, from 10 down to 5 minutes.
I’ve checked through every configuration setting, whether it was vlc or Configure Desktop, or even through Yast.
I did find that upowerd was running (which it shouldn’t because I’ve always had it disabled), and stopped it (through Yast).
At this point, I’m wondering if anyone else is having this problem.
And even if not, does someone have any ideas as to which direction I should be looking at next?

Sincere thanks.

What I found in the /var/log/zypp/history for that day.

Update: I’ve noticed that upowerd still runs as a service of some sort. I can do a “kill -9” but it resurects immediately. I’ve verified that upowerd is disabled. Now, I’m wondering what is needing upowerd.

No one has any idea at all? Wow! That’s really unusual.

Added a bug report.

Actually, you never mentioned which desktop you are using. Your signature might be a clue, but it is not always so.

Verify if it is KDE.

Then, give me the output of:

xset q

Yes, it is KDE4.

Okay.

First, go to Configure Desktop=>Display and Monitor, in the left panel choose the Screen Locker tab.

Make sure you do not have a check mark for “Start automatically after:

Next, create a file in /bin and give it a meaningfull name. I gave it the name noblankscreen

In that file, use the following script:

#!/bin/sh
    xset dpms 0 0 0
    xset -dpms
    xset s noblank

Give it the permissions:

rwxr-xr-x

Set it as a login script for your User account:

Configure Desktop=>Startup and Shutdown

On left, Autostart, button on right Add Script

It should then show as enabled, and the pulldown on the right should be set to Startup

Log out, log back in.

To check that it worked, run the command:

xset q

The output should then include the lines:

Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: no allow exposures: yes

and

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 0 Suspend: 0 Off: 0
  DPMS is Disabled

After about a half hour or so, you may want to check that the settings are remaining unaltered.

If it works as expected, remember that when you hibernate, it will get reset and – since you are not starting a new session from hibernation – you will need to drop to a terminal in that case and issue the command (if you used the same filename as I did):

noblankscreen

This command can be issued from your ordinary User account.

Excellent solution. I’ll report back with the results. As a completeness to this, have you an idea why this would start doing this? I’ve never had this happen before.

Well, prefer blanking now shows that it is off, so this help. I’ll keep this thread up to date (should know in about 5 minutes).

So far so good. Seems that the problem has been taken care of. Thank-you for your help.

[SOLVED]

Glad I could help. No need to click the star under my post.

This is actually an ongoing “problem” from several versions back, and not just in openSUSE. I have that problem with an Acer laptop I am running in 13.1, and have had it on other machines and in other openSUSE versions (12.3, for example).

I no longer remember the exact details, but explanations go something like this (one or all of these might be nonsense, I cannot recall the full true technical answer.):

With openSUSE, especially, and most Linux, being Green (environmentally) is a way of life. Somewhere, compiled into the kernel, if the system detects an Energy Star compliant or similar screen or monitor, every few minutes it kicks DPMS back on with some default settings.

Or, that might be, instead, the Energy Star (or similar power-saving) device sends periodic signals to the kernel telling it to reset DPMS.

… or ???

Great explaination. It makes sense, because the person who responded to the bugreport felt that I should be using the energy saving aspect.
