Scheduled forum maintenance

On Monday, October 1 at around 9 AM MDT, the openSUSE Forums web services
will be migrated to new hardware.

This has been in planning for a while now, and the new hardware has
arrived and is being tested now. There is not expected to be any
downtime from a user perspective, though it’s possible you might be
required to login again when the new servers are brought online.

In the process of doing this upgrade, the vBulletin infrastructure is
being hardened and reliability should improve significantly. The current
setup uses a single server hosting the database and web interfaces (as
well as the NNTP server). The new setup has the database and NNTP server
on one system, and the web services will be hosted on separate new
hardware.

There are more changes planned, including new load balancing network
hardware and migration of the database to a new database server.

I’d like to take this moment to thank Matt (in particular) for all his
hard work in trying to get our issues sorted out. As a result of his
efforts, things have improved in the past few months and are continuing
to improve every week. He’s put in time in the evenings and on weekends,
and has really helped not only in applying technical solutions to the
issues, but also has helped champion and drive changes like this hardware
upgrade.

I’d also like to thank our users and the staff as well - we know this has
been a long time coming, and it has been at times frustrating trying to
access the forums. Here’s to things working better and performing better!

and here is to go beyond 10 characters…

That’s interesting. I have to sign in every time I visit the forums.
Is there a special setting somewhere to tick that might say something like “keep me signed in”?

Best wishes,
Hugh

No, there does not seem to be one. But you should remain logged in for several hours, as long as you don’t close and restart your browser.

@nrickert

Thank you for that,

Best wishes,

Hugh

What I meant was that while logged in, there was a possibility that the
session wouldn’t be maintained when the new servers came online.

There is no “keep me signed in” option, as has been discussed at length
elsewhere.
