Scanning for networks with NM

Is there a way to scan for networks with NM? Is there a better wireless program you can recommend?

I assume you are talking about a Network Manager applet: Which one, there are quite a few. You can use the Gnome applet (which works pretty well) and the all mor eor less buggy applets for KDE3 and 4.

One which is neither KDE nor Gnome is wicd.

It depends what you want to do with the applet. If your main focus is scanning for wireless networks, I’d use the command line <shrug>, e.g.
iwlist wlan0 scan
