i have been given an old scanner, a canon canoscan lide70, yast says it’s unsupported, but are there any drivers out there for it? if so where can i get them and how to install them?
much appreciated.

Those are extremely well supported in Linux.
Maybe it’s broken.
Do you have the xsane packages installed? If so it should be the easiest thing in the world to configure in Yast / Hardware / Scanners.
i don’t think the scanner is broken…yast recognises it’s there. i have just installed xsane, and it appears in the kmenu as a program. but in yast>hardware>scanners if i search for the model, alongside it, it says unsupported. even sane says it’s not supported
Wow. There should be quite a few Canoscan drivers on that list. Did you try any of those other Canoscan drivers?
I have installed several Canoscan scanners in previous versions of Open Suse. I’m not sure of the exact models, but I assume they are all pretty similar.
When you reboot, does the scanner make noises while it’s being detected? This is usually a good sign.
It could be a USB problem, rather than the scanner. That would be my guess. Or possibly Canoscan support was dropped in Open Suse 11, but that seems doubtful.
well the canoscan lide 60 is supported, i tried that but it seemed to hang at the final stage of configuring. i have a lecture to go to soon so i will try if i get time afterwards and get back to you; but it seems like this particular model is not supported which is unfortunate!
I have an old Epson scanner I just configured yesterday. It should have taken about 2 minutes, but the scanner configuration program in Yast kept hanging and doing nothing for like 5 minutes at each stage of the process. I finally left the room and came back and it was finished. I think I spent about an hour and a half total fighting the process, and I’m still having problems.
Scanner setup seems quite slow and buggy in Open Suse 11 (compared to previous versions) so try to be patient if possible. I updated my x-sane packages and that seemed to help somewhat.
have a squint through this ERNST - Information: SANE backend for “CanoScan LiDE 600F” - Artikel, E-Business, Linux, News, Warenwirtschaftssystem, Content-Management, Programmierung, E-Shop, Netzwerke, Ingenieurbüro, Pflege, Hardware, Generator, Webhosting, Shop-System, Individ might give you a clue

most would agree that the place to go for a fairly definitive ruling on whether a scanner is workable with linux is the sane homepage:
SANE - Scanner Access Now Easy
if one looks up Canon scanners on their database, the one cited here is UNSUPPORTED:
and I think one really has to accept that as the (currently) final statement:
if one looks at the list of what is compatible,
one can now often find them second-hand at very cheap prices: we bought a second-hand CanonScan N650U and it has worked very well; I concede currently we have to do the # chown command … but …
http://www.sane-project.org/README.linux
as Suse persists in it only running as root;
but the hardware was very cheap, and after issuing the command in a terminal, it runs very well
the above page lists two useful commands, run firstly as user, and then repeated as root, if details not forthcoming to the user
sane-find-scanner
and
scanimage -L
so ours appears on
scanimage -L

Interesting. I simply assumed that all of the various Canoscan LIDE scanners were virtually identical on the inside, but apparently not.
It’s amazing that something as complex as an HP All-in-One unit is supported, while a Canoscan scanner that’s slightly different from a supported model won’t work at all.
o well, looks like i’ll have to look into buying a scanner then.
thanks for all your support guys.
