I have just bought an HP Officejet Pro 8600, and have it connected by USB to a PC running openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit). Application slike XSane or Simple Scan see no device. I downloaded the driver “hplip-3.13.2.run” from HP Linux Imaging and Printing and issued “sh hplip-3.13.2.run”, but the installation hangs. Any suggestions? JDW
Because you are running 11.4, which not supported anymore, it could be that newer versions do support the device better.
Also, while not many people run 11.4 anymore, ther could be a problem in recreating/studying what yoy get on the system of the potentil heplers here.
Thanks Henk. I did wonder that, and should have looked more carefully at the data at HP Linux Imaging and Printing – where (disappointingly) it is stated that the Scan feature is unavailable for openSUSE 11.4, 12.1, 12.2. JDW
Yes, when you would have known that, you wouln;t have tried of course.
In any case, it is still strange that the script “hangs” as you say.
You doing
sh hplip-3.13.2.run
, is that invented by yourself, or from some docs? Are you doing this as root? I ask because you do not post very many computer facts. It is better to copy/paste from the terminal window the prompt, the command, the output and the next prompt between CODE tags in your post (CODE tags you get by clicking the # button in the toolbar of the post editor). Then we would have seen what your working directory is, if you are root, what exactly you typed (that is about the only thing you gave), what came out of it (even if it is nothing, there would at least be he ^C when you aborted it). Tells much, much more with far less words to type by you.
Also in this case it could be usefull to post the script. And when it is very long, at least the first 10-20 lines or so (of course between CODE tags).
When this is a very new type you bought, support may eerge in the future of course (does not help you now :().
I just ran this again (as su)… you’ll see where I hit ctrl-C to terminate (this is the point where as I said, it “hangs”). But I guess all this is irrelevant for the moment, as apparently there is no basis to expect to be able to use the Scan feature, at least for the time being. As to my still being with 11.4, I’ll install 12.2 or 12.3 in a couple of months when I can afford some down time. Thanks again, John

j1d1w1;
Did you try adding the above missing dependencies via YaST2 and then running the
script? The openSUSE repositories are still available for 11.4, moreover the
Evergreen Project is supplying updates. See:
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Evergreen
According to Openprinting.org
(http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-OfficeJet_Pro_K8600)
this printer works well with the HPLIP driver. Did you try the HPLIP driver in
the openSUSE 11.4 repositories, rather than trying to create your own?

Well, when it says explicitly you should not run this as root, why didn’t you abort it immediatly?
And when you wantto find still available 11.4 repos, you can go to ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse.old/distribution/11.4/repo/oss/

Since the Evergreen project still uses the 11.4 repos. They are still available
on http://download.opensuse.org.

All we may need to do is just upgrade to 12.2 as i see the relevant driver in YaST==>Printer

Thanks Henk and vazhavandan, until I install 12.2 (which will have to wait) I can live with scanning to a USB stick. JDW
